Controversy Surrounding Full-body Scans At Airports Continues

January 11, 2010 by

Controversy surrounding full-body scans at airports continues In the days since the attempted terrorist attack aboard a U.S. bound airliner, Americans have been engaged in a full-blown debate regarding privacy, security and the limits of government’s right to search individuals who have not been suspected or charged with criminal activity.

The debates center around the full-body scanning technology numerous foreign and domestic agencies have said will be installed at airports around the world. Privacy rights groups have been critical of anatomically revealing scanners used on all travelers as a primary screening method.

"Obviously, we have a concern, because it’s a virtual strip search that is terribly invasive," said Michael German, policy counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union, quoted by CNN.

The news sources also reports that the Electronic Privacy Information Center has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security seeking details under the Freedom of Information Act about the department’s use of the advanced imaging technology.

In response, the Transport Security Administration (TSA) has said passengers’ faces are blurred on full-body scans, employees who deal directly with passengers do not see the scans and those who review the scans do not see the passengers.

That said, public acceptance of body scanners may be on the rise. "Nearly 90 percent of passengers choose the body scan over getting patted down by security guards," according to an expert quoted by The Plain Dealer.

Still, some critics say that while the new technology is effective in detecting threats from unsophisticated, mentally troubled individuals, more refined plots may still be beyond its capabilities.

What about the Health Effects from the airport body scans? If you fly frequently, how much negative radiation is emitted into the body? Any information on this?

  • DaveH

The thing that concerns me the most is why does anybody think the Government suspension of our 4th amendment rights will be confined to airports?
Soon, we can just kiss all of our Constitutional Rights goodbye, as there will always be excuses to wave them.
We need to work hard to roll back the size of Government. Vote Libertarian. Here is a comparison of Libertarian ideas in a Nutshell:

You need to live alone, raise your own food, take csre of your own health (without doctors), and get all your cash in gold so you can count it in your spare time.

      • DaveH

I do take care of myself Norm. If doctors depended on me for a living, they would go broke.

Congratulations you (and I) have been blessed with good health so far. I hope for your sake your health remains good.

    1. Is the health of every American at risk when going through a full body scan?
    2. Who controls the radiation?
    3. How much radiation will frequent flyers experience accumulatively?
    4. Does radiation kill the living cells and cause aging and death?
    5. Does the scans expose the various health issues of each human being and can those scans be used for HealthCare Reform decisions?
    6. Will all government officials be subjected to the body scan each time they travel as those on private jets will be exempt, so will all government officials exempt themselves just like they exempted themselves from liaibility for those effected with adverse side effects from the vaccinations and exempted themselves from ObamaCare?
    7. Where will the scans be kept and who will access them just like the thousands of leaks that are suppose to be “CONFIDENTIAL” and SECURED government information that always gets out one way or another?
    8. Who will be liable for any body scans stolen just like computer lists are stolen with identification information consistently from big businesses?
    9. Will the American people without criminal records and no terrorist connections be allowed to sign an exemption from the body scans?
    10. Why should innocent people be subjected to body scans that adversely effect our health – even doctors must ensure that the body is covered and only the x-rayed part is to be exposed and warn of health hazards?

    • alibertyhawk

I recently saw on fox NEWS Doctor segment on Sunday morning that the Radiation was not a factor unless pregnancy was involved. it is equal to 2 hrs of sunlight. My personal thought is that getting blown to bits by a terrorist seems to be more lethal. I DO deplore the terrorists that have caused this in the world but with perseverance we will triumph this evil one day. Stay strong all.

    • Joe H.

      RoseC,
I think you will find there is NO radiation!! As stated above it is like an MRI and I have had about a full dozen of those and no ill effects!!! I just wish I didn’t glow at night!!!!

      • Tinwarble

        Joe H,

Well, at least you don’t have to worry about stumping your toe when you walk through the house at night!!!

A little less than a year ago I was put through a random full body scan at TIA (Tampa, FL). After going throuh the scanning I was embarrased to see that the monitor was positioned for the guards at the scanning location to view, along with any fellow passengers looking in the right direction. Suffice to say there is enough “detail” shown on that monitor to embarrass most American citizens. The statements I continue to see about the monitor being in a remote location and not visible to passengers or the guards doing the “search” was NOT my experience.

  • David Ruth

I travel a lot on my job 1 or 2 trips a week, I have to tell you that the security we all have to do is nothing but a joke. I have spoken with TSA agents and he told me that they are not finding guns or bombs they are finding drugs. For the man who tried to blow up a plane on Christmas he should of never been allowed on the flight. We had enough intel that if our government was doing their job this would not of happened. As far as the scanners are concerned every time I run into them I always refuse to go in and I then have to to thru a pat down. I also have watched who is being chosen to go thru the scan and 9 out of 10 times it is your typical business travelers you know they guys with the laptops & Blackberry’s.

If someone wants to bring a bomb on board trust me a scanner is not going to find it unless we do a cavity search and that is not going to happen. We need to work on profiles and bring in some bomb sniffing process. Every person who fly’s in this country should be checked against the data base prior to arrival at the airport after all that’s why we have it.

  • Marilyn

If it takes full body scans to fly safely, I’m all for it. But, those scans do not search body crevices or stomach balloons. How will that be handled? The creeps who want to impose fear are doing a great job. The creeps who are intimidating good Citizens are doing a great job. And, reading about “profiling,” my daughter and an elderly couple were profiled?? on return trip from CT. All the creepy looking passengers walked right by them and into the terminal waiting room. My daughter stood in a wire cage, bare footed, while she endured the wand up her legs into her crotch. (Everyone could watch this!) Her purse was emptied to reveal Kotex, lipstick, comb, billfold…The elderly couple had their shoes removed and went through the same procedure! I did note that the elderly woman did not carry Kotex in her purse. All the while, the creepy looking passengers passed right by without a search. If ‘profiling’ would come to that, then it will not work because the airports will miss possible terrorists. To sum up, I am for full body search for everyone but not in front of all passengers.

    • independant thinker

I am against giving up one more tiny bit of my freedom so some fed can pretend he has done something to increase my security. I have carried a pocket knife everyday of my life since I was 10 years old if not longer and depending on what I am doing I sometimes carry two or three different ones. In order to fly anywhere I would have to give up my knives or lock them in my checked baggage. My knives are tools and I use them every day. This plus feeling even less secure under all the rules and regulations now in effect are the reasons I will not fly If I can use my automobile or Amtrack and a rental vehicle to go where I need and do what I want.

  • Robert D

Has anyone thought about scanning people BEFORE they enter an airport? Think about how much carnage a terrorist could do near check-in/luggage desks before they even get to the security areas. It would take months to re-build a blown-up terminal and deaths/injuries would be far greater than 200 in a single plane.

  • jomama

Now let’s go & catch some terrorists & criminals!!!

  • jomama

This really SHOULD NOT bother you if you have nothing to hide. I think it’s a great idea!!

    • J C

Having nothing to hide does not diminish my right to privacy.
Having nothing to hide does not mean I should submit my body (my private property)to radiation.

      • independant thinker

        Well said JC

      • denniso

j c…I can just imagine that you indeed have nothing to hide..

  • M. Peach Obama

What if the bomber walked past a Starbucks in the airport, are we gonna ban coffee on flights next? How about ball point pens, did the bomber have one on him? ‘OK, no more writing utensils’…When is it going to end?

PROFILE the bastards! DISCRIMINATE! The word means ‘choose’ you know—to exercise judgment or to choose something is not a bad thing!!!!

Janet Incompetano needs to be unceremoniously shown the door. She and her incompetent President (not my prez) should call all of their terrorist friends on speed dial, and just ask them not to blow up any planes. Right? Right. But they won’t do that, because the Teleprompter in chief WANTS sharia law in the US. Detroit is Obama city for him!

Just another Typical White Person p-o’d at the Marxist-in-chief and wishing that James Earl Ray were around.

    • The Goat

AAAAAAAAMMMMMMEEEEENNNNN for the sped reder amen

      • denniso

Sour Peach…I hate to tell you this, but Obama IS your president,if you live in my country. And,you sort of people have to show your true colors again and wish for the killing of Obama…disgusting, unpatriotic, and I hope the FBI is watching you! You are the very definition of a traitor for making that comment!

  • The Goat

You know it does not surprise me that these so called american democratic government officials would resort to letting americans die so they could control us through pshycological means. that would mean they are no better than the people we are fighting at present. i think they have shown us they are incapable of running this country. i really think they just want to line thier reseume with destroying a country, and filling thier pockets with money. as obama’s wife said…..you dont have to love a country to run it, i guess she was talking about into the ground.just wait….there will be one that slides by and does blow a plane up and then see where and how bad this crap gets.

    • independant thinker

You may be more correct than you know. Take what I relate next with a very large scepticism but it is something to consider. There is a theory that McVeigh was a government agent carrying out orders when he bombed the federal building in Oklahoma. There is also a theory that 9/11 was (take your pick) caused by Bush, ordered by Bush, or allowed by Bush. I have seen no documentation offered by those who make these claims but I also know our government is capeable of such things. It has released chemical/biological agents (supposedly non lethal) over large cities to see what effect they would have on the population. They knowingly exposed solders to radiation from nuclear bomb tests to see what effect it would have on them. They exposed people to veneral desease without telling the subjects they were being exposed to see what their reactions to the disease would be.

      • denniso

McVeigh was a perverted, evil, child killing, idiot who thought he was starting the next Am revolution to ‘free’ America from the evil gov’t,much like some people on this site think. What purpose would it have served the gov’t to blow up their own building?? Would a ‘gov’t agent’ have gone to his death willingly w/o blowing the whistle on his bosses?? It’s another absurd ‘theory’ among many others.

  • A.E.Koor

When I was in the Military many years ago I had to under go special training in a Harsh situtation, our classroom instructors trained us well and showed us how to stick many things up where the sun don’t shine, to get into a prison camp. Now today, you have a women who pretends to have her period, and a boyfried, who gets passed our whimpy scans at the airport, go to the bathroom on the airplane, and extracts “many” items that were put where the sun don’t shine, mix a martini and you guessed it “B O O M !” so stop your crying about full body scans……..any questions……..

    • JC

Well I guess that same logic is what is used by the anti-gun nuts.
If one psycho goes berserk with a gun…everybody should suffer for it. Same idea right?

      • Tinwarble

        JC,

Your assertion might hold true if every person with a gun wanted to shoot someone. Unfortunately, every Muslim extremist with a bomb on his back would love nothing more than than to take you & me (the infidels) with them on their way to meet Allah.

      • JC

What percentage of Muslims is that?
Unless you’re saying that every single Muslim is a threat…
My assertion holds true either way. The logic is the same Tinwarble.

      • JC

PS, Who knows? Maybe they are.

      • Joe H.

        JC,
Every Muslim coming from the middle east is a POTENTIAL threat!!! Do you want to take the chance when you fly?

      • Tinwarble

        JC,

I don’t know what percentage it is, but you could count them the next time that they show them on TV chanting “death to America, death to Israel”.

  • Jim

Why we are being targeted? Is it because the Holy Koran says to fight the infidel until they submit or all religion is for Allah?(Islamic) The Holy Koran which says that you can break treaties with and lie to the infidel? The Holy Koran which is opposed to freedom of religion and conscience? Gee, I wonder why we are being targeted. As far as terrorizing foreigners, we don’t need to, most of their governments do a better job than we ever could (think Taliban, Saddam Hussein, Hamas, Palestinian Authority, Hezbullah, etc) The Islamists are opposed to freedom. Who is doing most of the heavy lifting in stopping them? The US. Next question?

    • John Shee

Jim you did not get my point. There are lots of christian countries. Canada, Germany name a few, ofcourse they have been attacked but not to the extent as we are. We have got to get to the root cause, we cannot go on suffering with this terrorizem. We get carried away with what our priests tells us in the church. we have to go beyond that if want to resolve this problem. We don’t have to get down to Taliban’s level. We need to learn from our Lord Jesus what he tought us in bible. By coursing their book and looking down upon the rest of world is not going to solve the problem. It is not the Koran’s teaching that has brought them to this level. We Chistains are smarter and more educated in many aspects. By simply blaming their book without knowing the facts will make us look like them.

    • Tinwarble

      Jim,

Not that I disagree with you on any point, but a slight correction. I think the Koran says “to slay & enslave the infidel”.

And John Shee, the reason the Islamic terrorist want to kill us is because they want to set up and Islamic state. They attack us exactly because we have a tolerance of other religions and they think that Allah commands them to kill all non-believers.

  • John Shee

Has any body tried to find out the root cause for terrorism? Why only we Americans beeing mostly targetted. Are we in self denail? Or perhaps we don’t want to know the truth. We are spending millions of dollars to stop this without finding it out why? I am as mad at the terrerism as any other fellow American. I have no soft corner for stupids who are blowing them self up. But I would like to find out why only we are the victims.

    • Joe H.

      John Shee,
Gee I guess the English just had real bad weather in their subways right?

  • http://Scanning willi e martens

It is true that we should be concerned about security. I am a frequent flyer. However, body scanning is not only a threat becasue of “invasion of privacy”. That should not be the sole concern. It is a far more dangerous adventure from the radiation received, which unfortuantely nobody is even considering. The human body can only absorb a determined amount of radiation and that is the biggest concern. The choice unfortunately will become: Do you want to die from a terrorist attack or from an overdose of radiation? For an occasional flyer it is no problem but, for others it becomes a life threatening situation from a different perspective, RADIATION.

    • http://p.aranda@att.net Pauline

Please bring up the radiation problem on the full body scanners at
the airport. I’m more concern with the radiation that could be very
harmful to the human body. Some one must educate the public on this matter.

      Thank you,

      Paulin Aranda

      • Tinwarble

        Pauline,

From what I can find out the “Body Scanner” doesn’t use radiation, but uses radio waves and works more like a MRI than a X-Ray machine. Here’s some information on one type that they have used in the airports:

        http://www.dsxray.com/pdf/PV100_FAQJUN08.pdf

      • Tinwarble

Oh, but I’m still not for it, because it’s not the best technology out there! I just thought that you might like more info on the matter.

  • Brian N Smith

don`t worry THE MARK OF THE BEAST(666) IS NEXT AND DR HENRY KISSINGER
    WILL GET HIS WISH!

  • WW

Why don’t we just let your god(s) determine who should get on any form of transportation, especially the aircraft form…. after all, he or she is all knowing and would certainly save all those christians from embarassment and possible death. There is something that everyone can take away from these blogs and that is “Stupid is a condition, Ignorance is a choice”!!!! It is obvious there are alot of stupid people who continue to be ignorant. The cumlative IQ of these folks is close to a room temperature number!! But there will be loud outcry from everyone denouncing this, and all will continue to express themselves as “experts” when in fact they only show their ignorance!!!

    • Tinwarble

      WW,

You call people ignorant, but show your own intelligence by only attacking those here and offering no solutions nor even a sharp criticism. Oh, how you must bask the glory of your own obtuse reason.

      • Joe H.

        Tinwarble,
I think there is a better chance he is basking in the glow of his own ignorance!!!

      • Tinwarble

        Joe H,

        Yes, “obtuse reason” = “ignorance”.

  • Patriot

I’d rather Americans would learn how our country is terrorizing the world so that we didn’t anger foreigners so much a very few of them want to commit suicide runs. Body scans are a joke, if anyone thinks that makes flying safer. Being ex-military, it would be EASY for me to shoot down any commercial jet with a recoiless rifle at half a mile from take off.

    • john r. mclemore

ex military??? but in whose army??? AW WE DON’T WANT TO OFFEND THE REST OF THE WORLD. JEEZ.

      • J C

John with all respect. We should all be taking a serious look at what our foreign policy is really doing out there, as opposed to what they “say” they are doing. It really is two different things.

      • Arkham Grundy

As a combat vet m myself I saw first hand the results of ignorance on the part of foreign policy makers. They rarely have a clue about other cultures and how to deal with them. Accurate, real information is frequently ignored in favor of political expediency and many needlessly die on both sides.

Use Viet Nam as an example. We “bought” that war from the French who wanted their old colony back at our expense because we ignored the realities of Vietnamese culture and the aspirations of their people.

Now we can go there as tourists and buy things made there… we could have done this first and saved the lives of many of my friends whose names are inscribed on The Wall in Washington.

It’s not an issue of Republican of Democrat, liberal or conservative. Many people want to jump into war thinking they are being patriotic while all they are doing is appeasing the egos of stubborn politians in safe places.

Bush’s cowboy policies are a prime example of cultural arrogance at work. Let’s hope as a species we can move beyond and recognized that we all have to share our very unique planet.

Over reacting to terrorists lets them win. One jerk can force our entire society into fearful inconvenience. Just stop issuing viasa to people from terrorist countries.

      • DaveH

        Excellent Statement Arkham.

      • scragsma

        Hogwash.

      • Arkham Grundy

Perhaps you shou;ld consult your doctor about the new surgical procedure, the plexiotomy.

This entails the surgical implantation in the abdomen of a plexiglass window so people whose heads are crammed in a dark cavity can see.

      • Joe H.

        Arkham,
After being there for eighteen months I think I can say with ALL CERTAINTY that I don’t care to return to RVN unless it is to look for remains of our soldiers! Bring them ALL home or send us back!!!

      • J C

Well put, and with some experience behind it too. And yes, if the goal of the terrorists is to destroy America, the terrorists are winning. They must just stand back and laugh everytime they see another piece of the Constitution go down in flames…because of some guy with flammable underwear. Their cost…1000.00? Our cost?
Something that can never be replaced, let alone the dollars involved.

      • Fred in Laurel, Md

Yeah, now we can all just be tourists in Viet Nam and buy stuff. Never mind the thousands upon thousands who died in the (predicted) blood bath when we pulled out, because the same rats who are now in charge of our government persuaded the Congress to sink its knife in the backs of our troops who were actually winning. I guess when John Kerry said 30 years later to our troops, “I’ve got your back …” he must’ve left out the rest of the sentence “… in my gunsights.” Thank God for Bush, for not letting him or them do that to us again a generation later in Iraq. Mr. Grundy, we could have stayed there and completed the victory that your friends on that wall gave their last to achieve, and at least they wouldn’t have died in vain.

      • Tinwarble

        Fred,

I think the number was about 3 million after we pulled out, that’s not counting the unknown number after that time or counting the one’s being starved to death now because the regime there wants to build a nuke.♠♠♠

      • Joe H.

        Fred,
        Amen brother and welcome home!!!

      • Norm

        amen

      • Norm

amen to Arkham Grundy that is.

      • Tinwarble

        Arkham,

Thank you for your service, but as a Vet myself and having some experience in the matter of terrorism, I will have to respectfully disagree. This, unlike other wars we have been in, isn’t a matter of a war of nations, this is a war of ideals. Theirs being that they wish destroy or convert all who don’t share theirs.

The Muslim extremist don’t care what our foreign policies are, even though they have used it as an excuse to attack us, it is not their main concern. They believe that we are the infidels and all infidels have to be destroyed, because the Koran tells them to “slay & enslave the infidel”. There is no reasoning or understanding them, because you can do neither with someone who thinks that by there action of killing you (the infidel) they will win their place in heaven. You can no more reason with them than you could a hungry lion.

  • cayla

We have to profile! Many other nations have been successfully combating this kind of terrorism for decades. They are successful because they profile.

I don’t see what good a body scan would have done for the Christmas flight. Our government had everything short of the terrorist wearing a tee shirt stating “I am a terrorist with a bomb that I am planning on detonating during this flight”. My God, what more did they need? I think they purposely let him through to scare people into surrendering yet another piece of their freedom and I am surprised at the number of people here who are foolish enough not to see through this. I don’t know what I fear more; Terrorists, Our corrupt government, or idiots who enable both to be successful.

    • J C

      I have to agree.

      • Swansong

        Ditto!

      • john r. mclemore

        Mega Dittos!!!

    • Raggs

Your on point!!!! Most people don’t realize this is just another power grab of our rigth’s

    • kodiak60

The progressives/statists/liberals/socialists will use any crisis to create opportunities to impose more control, and they will even create crisises, in order to gain it! That’s exactly what they have done, and the numbed population falls for it. Wake up, people! You’re giving them more control, every day, and allowing them to do it!

  • David A. Celaschi

First of all, this man didn’t need a full body scan. What they also failed to mention was that he was only wearing a tee shirt and pants going to Detriot Michigan USA,which at that time was at 0 degrees temp. or lower. What needs to be done is give every one in Washington, especially Janet a full head oriented Cat Scan.Obviously they are all missing something in that area,I believe it’s called a needed Brain!

  • Rich B

The problem won’t be solved until we know who is getting on the plane. We need to institute profiling immediately. No scanning would be necessary.

    • Norm

      Rich B
We need both and whatever else it takes. Exploding aircraft are not a joke.

  • Swansong

Good grief! PROFILE! You HAVE TO profile. PERIOD!

“Well, *I* would rather go thru a full-body scan…” Sheez!

Stop the PC BS you Americans have become so comfortable with. It is going to end up with either one of you, your family or your fellow citizens getting murdered.

IDENTIFY the enemy and TARGET THEM for these scanners. Hell, it doesn’t even have to BE a scanner. Put a bomb-sniffing dog on them!

    Oh. That’s right… Muslims don’t like dogs, do they…

Ah well, screw it. THAT’S too sensitive! Go back to checking granny + 98% of the law-abiding citizen flying public and let the culprit break just about every red-flag rule in the book to go through to bomb the plane.

Moronic. You will never be safe. There’s no such thing.

Profile & target, or kid yourself about your “safety”.

    Simple choice.

    • kodiak60

I agree… profile them! Enough of the molly-coddling, PC garbage. BTW… someone else came up with the perfect solution… bomb-sniffing dogs, and make everyone touch bacon before they pass security check. Those that refuse, go through the body-scanners. That way, everyone else that complies? Pass on through, thank you very much, enjoy your flight.

      • American Citizen

Yes, we should profile, but weren’t the shoe bomber and underwear bombers Americans? How would you indentify them?

      • scragsma

No, the ‘shoe bomber’ was a British citizen, and the ‘undie bomber’ was Nigerian.

      • Fred in Laurel, Md

Right, which is why you profile not merely (nor even mostly) by appearance, but by behavior. In another comment here by “Carl,” he points to the Israelis, and their much better record. So study what they do and adopt what can be adopted for US air travel. I believe an important part of that is the recognition of suspicious behavior, along with the ability to probe further into whoever is thought to be exhibiting it.

      • Joe H.

Lets face it, not all Muslims are bombers, but 98% of the terrorist bombers ARE Muslims!!!!!!

    • Aaron

I also agree. I can’t stand this “political correctness” CRAP that Clinton came up with. It’s become such a standard with government that our safety, among other things, is being sacrificed. Plus, profiling works, and if it doesn’t work in one certain instance then move on to the next person of interest. No harm done. Some people are so offended when they are searched, yet they have nothing on them that is banned from airplanes. When you get mouthy about airport security searches, all your saying is that you have something to hide. I think that everyone should be patted down or given a full body scan or whatever is the most effective method for eradicating all threats from boarding airplanes, because I’d much rather be safe than worry about someone’s feelings and end up dead.

      • independant thinker

Just how much personal freedom and privacy are you willing to give up for a very small increase in security.

      • DaveH

We have gone from a nation of rugged pioneers to a nation of cowering people in just a little over 230 years.

As usual, Dave H is right again. We need more Americans like him.

      • Norm

        DaveH
Get real. What you say makes sense in the world of of the 1700′s. In case you missed it, we’ve had a few minor changes since Jefferson and Franklin died.

      • denniso

‘more Americans like DaveH’??? Please,no!! We would be inundated 24 hrs a day w/ the selling of the libertarian party to us. Take it back!!

      • Tinwarble

        i.t.,

First, I just want to say that I am no fan of the “Body Scanners”, I think that there are better technologies out there that could do a better job in a less evasive way.
With that said, I believe your argument about giving up freedom is an erroneous one. For someone to violate your freedom, you would first have no choice other than the one offered. The security measures in a Airport do not violate any of your freedoms, because you have the choice not to fly and therefore not participate in going through those security measures. And before someone says “But some people have to fly!!”, no, some people choose to fly, they also have the choice to drive, take a bus or go by train and even if they must, to take a boat. Flying is not a right, it is a convenience, the true violation of your freedom will be when they tell you that you have to fly & you have no other choice in the matter.
Also, for those that would say that they are being Unconstitutional by violating the 4th Amendment. I would remind you, that an unlawful search & seizure is when it is done without a warrant or your permission. When you buy your ticket to fly you are aware of the security measures that you will have go through to get on the plane. And because you are aware of those measures, & that certain items aren’t allowed, you have entered into a de-fact-o agreement that you will allow them to search you and seize anything not allowed. It is no different than if the police knocked on your door & asked to search your house and you agree to let them. That is not a 4th Amendment violation because you gave them your permission. And you can choose not to let them search you, you want be able to fly, but you are not made to go through the security. Now, if you are sitting in the Duty Free Shop and they come up and start frisking you without any cause, then that is against the 4th Amendment.
Now, if you want to make the argument that they are doing too many things to make people feel uncomfortable without making the security a whole lot better, then I can agree with you. But until they tell you that once you walk into an Airport that you can’t walk back out, know that you are still free.

      • Tinwarble

Oh, and Dave, unless you can point to a time during the “Pioneering Days” when people had to worry about “Dirty Bombs”, chemical attacks or perhaps and Indian riding into town on his horse with TNT strapped to him and killing 3000 people, I wouldn’t use that to call people cowards.

Also, if it sounds as though I am siding with “Big Government”, I’m not. But I am fairly sensitive about people getting blown up, mostly because someone tried to blow me up. And even though I would like to know how you were to feel about security after you experienced what I have, I wouldn’t wish it for anyone & hope that no one ever does.

      • denniso

Terrorism here is real, though a very minor risk for us here. Other parts of the world have been much more affected for decades. You are more likely to die in an auto wreck, random shooting, heart attack or victim of domestic violence…we are letting irrational fear push us into near panic and wrongly affect our daily lives. NO security is ever going to be perfect, and we should be congratulating the citizens on the plane who stopped the undie bomber…that part of ‘the system’ worked.

      • fu

        i agree

    • MadMax

Right on! Americans are so brainwashed by the government and elete’s media, they probably will let them go farther and farther to infringe on their personal freedoms. We now have a country of cowards.

      • Curtis

Does knowing how to spell “elite” make you one of the elites?

      • MadMax

Excuse me for the misspelling, I guess the cat’s out of the bag, I am lacking at spelling. At least I’m not brainwashed.

  • Robert

I don’t have a problem with a full body scan. But then, I’m just a law abiding, god fearing, patriotic American and what I think doesn’t matter to all the politicans and liberals. Guess I should just pack my bags and go to a country that believes in real human rights like: Sudan, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan. Now they know how to respect people who have different opinions from them. And maybe I should convert to Islam. You know that peaceful, law abiding, human rights loving, neighbor loving, quiet, docile, wouldn’t think of killing innocent people religion that us Christians don’t understand or respect. Yeah, that’s what I’m going to have to do if I want to save myself. Anyone care to join me? Just remember, if you join Islam you get a free Bomb Exploding Vest and all the training you want. Man that’s a better deal than the ginsu knife.

    • Carl

Robert, I understand your sarcasm but there are some issues that as a counter-terrorism consultant to local, state and federal government I feel need to be addressed.
      1. We’re doing airport security wrong. The Israeli model is best. People go through better security, before they enter the terminal concourse, by individuals who are much better trained and have IQs above room temp.
      2. As a nucelar engineer I have an issue with irrradiating people willy-nilly. For instance, pregnant woman, people that have just undergone a nuclear med procedure, young children and even men and women of childbearing years should be concerned. These machines, while low-power, still bombard the body with ionizing radiation and while I’m not fearful of radiation I do not expose myself to more radiation than is needed.
      3. We focus the majority of our “airport security” on the passenger side; however, the maintenance and services side is still the greatest place of vulnerabilty. Too easy to bring a device aboard during cabin service or even during normal maintenance in a hangar (happens every 100 hours of flight time!).

We have every reason to believe that our rights are being trampled but the steamroller built to crush the Constitution is built into the new Health Care legislation – far more serious than anything in the Patriot Act. Stay on point, Robert!

      • Fred in Laurel, Md

Carl, good points. I hope your advice is getting really heard by whichever governments are consulting you. On your points:
Pt#1 — The Israelis undoubtedly do a superb job of this; they have to, their existence as a nation depends on it. I wish more of our folks would realize that we just might be in that boat, too. But I’m not at all sure that the Israeli model, with one airline (El Al), and a relatively small no. of flights and airports, could work in the US without slamming air travel here down to a trickle. Your key point, I think, is the constant vigilance by alert observers–this is essential! Just the awareness of odd behavior, along with the ability to follow up on concern about it, could do wonders.
Pt#2. I too once worked in radiation physics, and I’m sure you know that merely traveling on a commercial flight adds to your radiation dose, probably more than a full-body scan will do; that we all get a certain amount of natural background radiation; and that this bkgd varies greatly from place to place (Denver has a much higher bkgd than New York; parts of India have 10x the ave. bkgd of the US, with no greater cancer incidence). Still, your point about unnecessary exposure is valid–there needs to be strong justification, and I believe there is in this case. But here enters Pt#1, that we could do a much better job of choosing who to subject to further scrutiny.
Pt#3. I hadn’t heard this before, and having heard it now, I’m wondering why I haven’t? I hope it’s because it’s already being checked into quietly, or at least that it will now be.
And ditto on the so-called Health Care legislation. Our current war footing, as it has always done in the past, must lead to certain more intrusive government actions, but these must be tolerated only until we can come out of that wartime status, at which time they must be retracted, or strongly and forcibly rejected politically by the people. What is going on up on Capitol Hill in the name of health care insurance reform is much more sinister, because it would continue forever, regardless of anything as temporary as war.

      • http://Don'thaveone Sally

Carl, you are absolutely on the mark. My son who at one time was Security Office for various airlines explained to me exactly what you just wrote. What I don’t understand is why it hasn’t happened yet as it doesn’t cost that much. Like the man said in one of these blogs, Obummer et al are just puppets and until we find out who is behind this, we really are defense less unless of course if they keep pushing our buttons because now we are irratted but watch out when we really get Mad and get organized – and before that happens, ever muslim better leave – we can confiscate all the properties owned by them also to pay the poor people who have lost loved ones because of them – Kinda like Saudia Arabia did on nationalizing the oil fields after the American companies had done all the work and spent all the money. HMMMMMMM

      • http://myronjpoltroonian.blogspot.com Myron J. Poltroonian

Sir. Having done airfreight and courier work some 25 years ago, I’ll bet I can still get into (and back out of) so-called “secure” areas at SFO, and most of the other major airports throughout the land without them even suspecting anything was amiss. There are just too many “couriers” in and around airports, especially near flight times, as consolidators are always trying to ship as much as possible at one time for cost control and customer convenience.

    • Joe H.

      Robert,
Please, Take them up on the offer!!! As near as I can figure, with your attitude about religion you should last all of 5 seconds!!!

  • eddie47d

Although I’m strong on civil liberties I believe we have to do more to protect the flying public . This should be done at mass transit sites also. According to the article above peoples privacy is protected. Our nation runs on commerce and our govt. needs to make it safe to do so. My wife and I have traveled abroad and now she insists that she’ll never get on another airplane . I think that is foolish talk and just what the terrorists want. So I have some work to do in changing her mind. God Bless America.

    • kodiak60

I’m with her! I said the samething to my husband. And he agrees. If we’re traveling domestically, I’d just as soon drive, now. And if I do have to fly for international travel, I’ll do the pat-downs, gladly. I don’t want to be exposed to any more x-rays than I have to. Another thing… if the Dutch had done their job in Amsterdam, we wouldn’t have had this whole scenario! But nothing has been said about them falling down on the job!

      • American Citizen

Kodiak, that’s what I’ve been saying, the whole thing started in a foreign airport. Why is our CIA on the carpet for this?

      • TIME

        Mega DITTO.

By the way if someone really wants to take an air plane down, there are at least ten things I can think of off the top of my head that almost every person takes on a plane daily, the the rest are on the plane already.
So when they ban {{all carry on’s}} Combined with everyone who flys should just be nude.

When you give your {FREEDOMS} away you never get them back.
As well; anyone can fit the “PROFILE of the moment.”

      • Fred in Laurel, Md

The intelligence community needs to be called on the carpet for not picking up on way too many clues before this guy got on that plane. But as far as the whole thing starting in a foreign airport — as I understand it, nowadays we have US border/immigration agents at foreign airports checking everyone traveling from foreign territory to the US. So that particular failure does not fall on the Dutch.

    • independant thinker

eddie………Just curious, how much personal freedom and privacy are you willing to give up for a very small increase in security?

  • Disgusted

I would rather have gone through the full body scan then get blown up in the air because someone hid a bomb in their underwear! I think they should be installed in every airport now!

    • realbigal

It is very sad that so many Americans have turned into sheeple.

      • Norm

        realbigal
Beter a live “sheeple” than a dead idiot who was afraid someone might have seen the outline of their genitals. OOOH!

      • J C

Thanks I’ll pass on being “irradiated”. The metal sacnner and pat down are sufficient.

      • realbigal

Imagine what this world would be like if Thomas Jefferson, George Wshington, etc thought that way.

      • Norm

        realbigal
Unfortunatly the founding fathers, as astute as they were, could never had imagined the world that we now live in. They had no plumbing, no transportation system other than horses, no communications or data processing, no medical knowledge, crude military hardware etc..

      • JC

Al, Norm’s right that the founding father’s couldn’t have imagined the world as it is. After all they advocated non-intervenionism.

      • Joe H.

        Real,
ah yes the old reliable horse- bomb!!!!!

      • denniso

If people are worried about airport security or being blown up in a plane, then don’t fly!! No one is forced to fly, other than biz people working for a boss. Drive, take the train or don’t go..how many air trips are really necessary anyway? We could stop global warming overnight if we quit flying.

      • Claire

        Exactly!
Don’t fly. Besides, it is bad enough on the ground.

    • Allan Rein

Whole body scans are very interesting, but to my knowledge, no one has published any articles on how much radiation will each body receive from such scans, and what is the cumulative effect of this radiation on frequent travellers. How about the radiation dosage that the people working near these machines will receive each & every day of exposure. Who will pay for the treatment of their radiation induced cancers?

      • Fred in Laurel, Md

Don’t forget that just riding on a commercial flight adds to your radiation dose by taking you above most of the atmosphere, which at sea level protects you from a good deal of cosmic and solar charged-particle radiation. Airline flight crew members get this exposure all the time on their jobs. I suspect that with modern x-ray imaging technology, the dose from these scans will turn out to be miniscule compared with what you’re getting just flying across country.

I’m much more concerned with the kind of failure to pick up on obvious red flags that is illustrated by the “Fruit-of-KaBoom” bomber. Do we, as a last line of defense against such failures, need to fill planes with Dutch film producers?

      • Joe H.

        Fred,
We need to play up the idea that the Muslims tried to punish the non-believers and instead God punished the crotch bomber!!! I don’t even want to guess thepain levels he’s going through right now!!!! ooooh!!!

      • Claire

I hope the crotch bomber is never the same again, I hope he has ruined his you-know-what!!! Hopefully he is a eunich now.

      • Richard Pawley

Don’t worry, the government will tell us it’s perfectly safe and that the danger is minimal. In my book on what’s really going to happen in the coming financial crisis I mention the several hundred people in Mexico who have implanted RFID microchips that can open security doors and such but no studies have been done on the effects on human of having such implants. (In dogs they often cause cancer or speed it up – not all of course). I’m sure it will be many years before any studies are done on humans for such powerful devices as these scanners. Even CAT scanners have been known to increase cancer risk! Incidentally, simply flying through a powerful lightning storm can be the equivalent of 400 chest X-rays due to a newly discovered phenomena known as terrestrial gamma rays caused by the storms themselves (apparently). To bad El Al Airlines (of Israel) doesn’t fly all over the US. Then we would be really safe. Instead Obama is trying to unionize all TSA people and then forget it. I’ll drive or stay home. We need experts at the helm, not amateurs or political appointees no matter how nice or smart they are.

      • MadMax

Be careful when you assume these scanners will protect you. Have an article for you – Full body scanners used on Air Passengers may damage human DNA – at fourwinds10.com. “These machines emit terehertz photons-high frequency energy particles….”.

    • independant thinker

I would rather be blown up than go thru a full body scan on the scanners. Probably won’t be an issue for me though for I have no intention of flying anywhere unless absolutely necessary anyway.

    • DaveH

That may be Disgusted, but it is doubtful that the scan would have revealed the bomb material in the terrorist’s underwear.
      http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/2009/12/29/2009-12-29_untitled__2qaeda29m.html

      • Tinwarble

There are also better & less evasive technology’s to detect explosive material. “Explosive sniffers” can detect an explosives & materials that can be used as explosives, where the body scanners can only see what is visible and wouldn’t shown anything that was inserted anywhere on someone’s body. They also have a lower “false negative” and “false positive” rate than most other technology.
