Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele made a splash in the news this week, accusing the Obama administration on Tuesday of following an inconsistent policy toward terrorism, just a day after the release of his new book where he denounced the president’s overall policies while heavily criticizing recent members of the GOP for losing touch with America.
In Right Now: A 12 Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda Steele says that the Republican party needs to recognize that they "most glaringly compromised [their] principles” after the Reagan administration and that it is time to hold elected officials accountable.
"We must support Republican officials who assert these principles," he writes. "When elected Republicans vote against Republican principles, the voters must withhold their support—withhold it vigorously and consistently."
Steele went on to criticize several of Obama’s policies, including the stimulus bill, which he referred to as "a reckless, wasteful, pork-laden spending spree."
Meanwhile, on Tuesday Steele told NBC’s Today Show that the current administration continues to avoid acknowledging a war on terror, and that it is making a mistake by putting terrorism suspects on trial in civilian courts, stating, "the public doesn’t view them as having rights in the criminal system," according to The New York Times.
