Can Drinking Coffee Protect Your Brain?

November 19, 2009 by

A new study suggests coffee isn't brain foodIt can give you a boost of energy, but new research finds a cup of joe can’t help preserve brain function as you age.

According to Reuters, researchers at the University of Helsinki assessed the coffee drinking habits, as well as other social, demographic and health data of a large population of twins who were 50-years-old on average. The majority of subjects—75 percent of men and 83 percent of women—reported drinking more than three cups of coffee a day.

Participants were screened on a yearly basis starting at age 74 to measure cognitive function and dementia.

They found no association between coffee consumption and declining cognition or dementia scores in either men or women. They did find, however, that aging was linked to declines in thinking ability.

In addition, the study, appearing in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that coffee consumption wasn’t protective in preserving brain function in middle-age.

Heart disease, diabetes and depression are associated with lower cognitive function, according to the report.

Nutritional supplements that can boost brain function and memory include B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E and beta carotene, as well as omega-3 fatty acids and gingko biloba.ADNFCR-2035-ID-19398484-ADNFCR

Been around for a long time and it’s been my experience that all politicians tell you what you think you want to hear. No exceptions!

I just purchased a new coffee roaster and I love it. I liked your post and I am going to try out some of your tips. Thanks!

Recently, I’m hearing that one cup of coffee a day is plenty. Roasted coffee is to be avoided, as it overcompensates for its protective qualities.
If it is true that coffee can help protect a brain, then someone should force every elected official in DC to start guzzling as much coffee as they can in every 24 hour period. Obviously, their defective brains need all the help they can get.
They might try coffee enemas, too. Protection from ‘both ends’ can’t hurt anyone in DC, and it might even help. Think positive, people.

SC,while it certainly does seem that elected officials in DC are making many stupid decisions, they are not. Their decisions are exactly what their controllers want them to do. While they are “elected” to serve the people according to the Constitution, they are now, and have been for the last century, serving the “powers that be” and will continue to do so. So, whatever they do, know that they are not doing it for us…they are doing it for “them”. That is why it is a good practice to figure anything coming out of DC is a lie and not good for the citizens in the USA.
