Stupak amendment continues to generate heat in healthcare debate The healthcare reform bill provision banning federal abortion funding is fast emerging as one of the key contentious issues as the congressional negotiations move forward. In fact, last week a high ranking House Democrat predicted the Stupak-Pitt amendment was likely be removed.

The amendment prohibits coverage of abortion in the public option and bars anyone receiving a federal subsidy from purchasing a health insurance plan that covers the procedure.

Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina was quoted by MSNBC as saying he believes the amendment will be dropped from the legislation when the House and Senate bills—the latter is still pending—will be fashioned into a final act. He also suggested many House Democrats voted for the amendment with the expectation that it will not be included in the final version.

In response, GOP spokesperson Joanna Burgos denounced what she called "a cruel and morally questionable political hoax" committed by the Democrats.

"The last-minute maneuvering by Democrats in Congress to strip provisions allowing for taxpayer-funded abortions was nothing more than a shell game," she stated, quoted by TheHill.com.

The news provider says that although House liberals have threatened to block the final bill if the amendment is not stripped, it is not clear how removing the provision would affect centrist Democrats’ vote.

    I was a big fan of lebron in cleaveland. I am having a tough time watching him on the heat…his main issue is he tries to do too much

    Yes, you are both so right….and Greg I also agree with your opinion about federally funding abortions. What an absolute CROCK!

    I no longer have faith that most will take the unborn child into consideration and give them a chance at a full life.

    I try to understand other’s viewpoints, but it’s difficult to understand someone who chooses an abortion because it’s more CONVENIENT at that point in their lives…that’s why I will NEVER support having taxpayer dollars pay for people to basically UN-DO what they deem a MISTAKE and what I deem a LIFE!

    I feel I do have a pretty good understanding of the abortion issue. I wasn’t aborted and am grateful my mom made the choice she did. For those who say, she made a choice so what’s the big deal…the big deal is that she made (in my opinion) the right choice; what about all those whose choice ENDED an unborn child’s chance at being a wonderful human being…and all because of their parent(s) mistake…how very sad!

    And to Robert’s point, all I can say is I’m a woman and I don’t feel an abortion is simply a “woman’s ISSUE”. I also believe there are men out there who would want to have a say about whether they have a right to be a FATHER to an unborn child they helped create. Almost sounds way to easy for some men to walk away with the apparent blessing of the woman who chooses abortion. Just wondering though….what happens if a man might be a great father…doesn’t he at least deserve a chance at being a good father and doesn’t the unborn child deserve such a chance as well? I just don’t buy the “it’s all about the woman” on this topic.

    Is there anyone else out there that may be thinking as I am, that one of the reasons we find our country in the mess we are in is because of the stand that was taken on abortion by our highest courts several decades ago?

      Godonlyknows, I totally agree with you. Roe vs Wade politicized this issue long ago. What a mess!

    I would like to repeat the words of Ross Perot’s running mate when asked about the abortion issue. The general asid “He believed the issue is a woman’s issue. That no male has the right to tell a woman what she can or can not do with her body”. This had a profound impact on my own opinion about abortion. While I do not believe in abortion, I agree with the general. Who am I to tell any woman what she can or can not do with her body? Look at the makeup of our Congress and Senate. What right do they have to decide on this issue. Personal choice is what really matters and this health deform bill takes that away from all of us. Too bad these politicians weren’t aborted back then. Maybe we would have been better off today.

      Robert, first of all, the issue in this healthcare “reform” is not whether or not a woman should be allowed to have an abortion. It’s about whether or not federal funds should be used to pay for abortions. Most people do not favor using federal funds for abortions. The Stupak-Pitt Amendment does NOT prevent women from having coverage for abortions. It only prevents federal funds from being used for that coverage. The liberal democrats are trying to smuggle federally-funded abortion into the healthcare “reform” bill. Obama even lied about this in his address to Congress back in October, in order to cover it up. He said that federal funds would not be used for abortions in the healthcare bills, but yet they are riddled with language that mandates federal funding of all abortions. Abortion is NOT healthcare. Most abortions are done for birth control, not to save the life or health of the woman. Any abortion done for the life/health of the woman would be covered under the Stupak-Pitt Amendment.

      With regard to “tell[ing] a woman what she can or can not do with her body,” it is medically incorrect to even imply that an unborn child is part of a woman’s body. Any medical textbook will tell you that the unborn child is a totally separate human organism with his/her own genome, sex, blood type, heart beat, brain waves, etc.

    How sad that the average American is so apathetic to what is happening in Washington. We are becoming dependent on the government for way too much. Our country is much too large to try and pull off government health care. There have been a couple of states that have tried and failed. What makes this administration think it can pull it off? America is truly on the verge of imploding, and when it happens people are going to be standing around looking at each other wondering what went wrong. Those who are listening to the main stream media will be the most shocked. They actually think they are being kept up to speed by what is being reported on TV.

    I’m sick to death of this red herring.

    We debate about paying for abortion instead of talking about the real issue.

    This bill, with or without abortion funding, is going to BANKRUPT the majority of our citizens. Our insurance rates are going to explode, the costs are going to explode (look to the seniors prescription plan to find out how well the government “helps”) and millions of jobs & insurance policies will be lost.

    My employee health insurance plan has gone up 50% in the past two years. We are cutting the plans for both my own family, and my remaining employee. She thinks that Obama is going to pay for it. I explained that at her current wage she will have to self-fund at the rate of about 30% of her gross pay (so close to 45% of take home).

    And we continue this bs line about paying for abortions.

    The real abortion is the entire plan and everything coming out of WDC right now.

    Cripes people wake up, quit bickering over BS, or stock your homes and pantries cause you have no idea how reduced our standard of living is going to be in a couple years.

      For the most part I agree with you both. I think people will eventually be shell-shocked when they start shelling out of their own pockets; they think it’s fine as long as they think someone else’s pocketbook will be paying for it. I also think some people choose to spend their money on the newest and greatest electronic equipment, brand new cars, etc., and then say they can’t afford the health insurance premiums.

      I don’t agree however, that the abortion issue is irrelevant. I worked in the medical ultrasound field for many years, and I still don’t get how people can see a tiny fetus with a beating heart and not consider it’s (future) life to be viable. I expect there are some justifiable reasons for abortion (incest, rape, etc), but “convenience” is not a justifiable reason…and I believe the majority of the time, abortion in this country…is used for convenience. Just my thought.

      TeresaE, this is not a “red herring” by any stretch of the imagination. Whether we like it or not, the harsh reality is that there WILL be a healthcare “reform” bill coming out of Congress, which will be signed by the President, because of the complete control of our government by socialists. It will have everything but the kitchen sink thrown into it, complements of the U.S. taxpayer. With regard to abortion, if the Stupak-Pitt language is not in the final version of this bill, it will be just all that more expensive, because EVERY abortion performed in America will be federally funded! Never before has the federal government had to foot the bill for all abortions in this country. I find it hard to believe that anyone would support funding of birth-control abortions at the expense of medically necessary procedures that will eventually have to be rationed, because of the huge monetary burden that this health care “reform” bill will put on us all. It would behoove us all to support any amendment that would cut unnecessary expenses, since this bill is going to get passed, whether we like it or not.
