Second Republican Signals Support For Comprehensive Healthcare Reform

Second Republican signals support for comprehensive healthcare reform Media reports suggest the tide may be turning in favor of the Democrats’ efforts to push through a sweeping healthcare reform, as another GOP senator has said she may vote for it.

Susan Collins, the junior Republican senator from Maine, said on Wednesday that "the status quo is unacceptable," and signaled her intention to lend her support in the efforts spearheaded by congressional Democrats, WMTW.com reported.

However, she echoed many of her GOP colleagues by saying she is still concerned that the pieces of legislation passed in five different committees fail to ensure greater affordability for American families and small businesses, and may lead to higher costs.

Collins also spoke against the so-called public option for health insurance that would compete with private companies.

The senator has thus joined her senior colleague from Maine, Olympia Snowe, who was the only Republican voting in favor of the bill proposed by the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday.

That move earned her praise from President Obama who spoke of her "political courage" for crossing the party lines during a press conference in the Rose Garden following Tuesday’s vote.

    Eyes Wide Open, Don’t presume to know who I “voted in”. I’ve been unhappy with our country’s direction for years. Trouble is its hard if not impossible to get the Senators ear with those that want handouts for costly social, never ending, forever growing programs, screaming for more, more, its for a good cause, if it only helps one person, etc. Just as bad evidently my mail to the Senate goes to a closet in the basement where aids or interns figure which printed form best reflects the Senators answer, because the Senator is too busy listening to lobbyist with perks and which they know on a first name basis. Now as to the problem with health care is basic, the first words most say is “how are we going to pay for it” EEEEKKK wrong question!!!! what should be asked is how do we make health care cheaper. Not affordable. CHEAPER. First start roundup and deportation of all illegals. Get rid of 12 million, look at the savings! Schools emergency room fees, welfare, crowded highways, crime, etc. etc. This would open jobs for americans that need them. Second let insurance companies cross state lines. Nationalize a common language, not legalese on the insurance policies so everyone can read and understand them. The same for Billings. The exact same except for the company name etc. Third some tort reform, some is required to protect the people, but the courts have been way too generous with others monies its time to put the brakes on. Fourth the drug companies are making out like bandits. Lets have drugs from Canada made available. Shorten the time before a drug goes generic. Ohh how the drug companies will howl. But don’t listen. Colleges and universities do a large portion of R&D that these companies make use of. Fifth, graduate more doctors there should be more completion, let the doctors advertise their rates for office calls etc. Maybe some of them might be available over the weekend, when as everyone knows if you kid is going to get sick with a fever of 103 degrees or more it will be on Friday or Saturday night. This would help out on the emergency room. This is the only way I know to help health care. Throw hundreds of Billions at it? HELL NO!!!

    Obama praises Snowe for her “….’political courage’ for crossing the party lines….”. However, TRUE courage would be to stand against this monstrosity, which Snowe cannot do.

    Just as Obama lauds Snowe for her “political courage”, the Dems are calling this a “bipartisan” effort, simply because ONE (1) Republican (in name only) has bowed to them.

    If just ONE (1) Dem ever had the “political courage” to cross party lines and vote with the Repubs, the Dems would NEVER call it “bipartisan”.

    I say OUT WITH THE RINOS! Snowe and Collins both – (and there are a few others)!

      I say down with the the political parties and hurray for bipartisanship. Let the best man or woman win and damn the party lines. It should always be about the country and the people, not the pocketbooks lined with gold for pure profit.
      I really believe Palin will be interesting to keep an eye on, and not to hear all the rude and crude comments by the morons in the MSM or D.C.

        Palin will never be elected in the United States and neither will Huckabee. They’re way too radical. If they run in 2012 Obama wins. In fact, the more Beck, Fox, and hate radio rant and rave, the more loud mouth gun-toting tea parties, the more moderate Republicans become Independents and vote Democratic.
        Before I semi-retired in March I used to listen to Hannity on my car radio – I had an hour commute. I agreed with about 30% of his commentary. A couple of nights ago I caught him on Fox. He’s lost it too. What used to be biased but constructive has become hatred and venom, and generally void of truth.

        Bill of Attainder:
        “A legislative act that singles out an individual or group for punishment without a trial”.
        Punishment by Bill of Attainder was a very harsh overt act. Look up what the Bills of Attainder were used for by the British in those days.
        This act on ACORN is to just not give them further taxpayer funds. But if you want a trial of ACORN, bring it on! They should be tried at least in a Congressional court. But do you think that would ever happen with the very Partisan Democrats in majority?
        Does anybody think the very biased Eyes would condone that? Now she is sticking up for criminal organizations!

    anyone that sides with a company who makes profit of human pain is and idiot and those are the real monsters people should pay doctors directly for services or like in other countries we get taxed and we woulnt have to worry about the bill how come the health insurance CEO’S make more money than doctors who provide the service thats crazy let me ask you how good would it be if the police charged us for getting protected without regulation or firefighters i mean we already do but since evryone pays taxes we just have to work and pay them according to your income please lets make america safe i cant belief that 911 heroes dont get the treatment they need and they have to beg for it this country is not what it could be we put profit of the already wealthy over everything they are so many things to make money off but human pain and suffering is not one!

      You are aware that this man is from Austria? You do know that Austrians pay directly from their salaries to a State Social Insurance program don’t you? They also get a sickness insurance policy. In addition to the European Health Card, which their country participates in. Whole lot of social programs that your guy probably enjoys. Since his site readily advertises Austria, I would think he probably didn’t give up his citizenship and maybe he is located there and not here. Some of the ideas sound plausible, however some just aren’t going to work for us.

    Under comrade obama’s ‘leadership,’ the stimulus package is a farce (and we may get stuck with second one), the world sees comrade obama as a lame joke, jobs are disappearing, open borders are ignored, state governments are cutting back on services, small businesses are viewed as expendable, the middle class is being sacrificed to placate comrade obama’s ultraleft chippies, Americans will be further taxed via health care ‘reform,’ and comrade obama sees an enemies list as an asset.
    Does comrade obama know the difference between a dictionary and a manual designed to implode a nation (e. g., alinsky’s Rules for Radicals)? Maybe a strong dose of starbuck’s supreme caffeine would force him out of his druglike stupor. At some point, someone has to remind him that The Emperor’s New Clothes was a book. It was not intended to re-make America in the image of China or Russia. Long live comrade obama’s administration – on another planet – in a universe far, far away!

        Norm, SC doesn’t support the US being the world’s policemen, so why the name-calling?
        If countries could just print extra money to solve their problems, then we would have no poor countries. When Big Government spends our money, it is inherently spent more wastefully then that money a private company spends. They are not subject to the rigors of the marketplace like private businesses are. If a government employee sticks his neck out and proposes a radical idea which fellow employees ridicule what is his reward? If his idea succeeds, he gets little reward. If his idea fails then he must endure the ridicule of his fellow employees ad nauseum. So government employees take the safe route. Who wouldn’t under those conditions? And if government agencies screw up totally do they lose their business? Rarely. So there is little incentive to perform. Those and many other factors contribute to worse economies in Socialized countries. Of course the Government leaders enjoy their Monopoly positions regardless of the suffering of their subjects.

        I don’t know about the greed of the banks, but I do know that the greedy Liberals want to take money from others by force. I do know the greedy Liberals want to take my choices away. So far, I have had no bank force me to bank with them. The excess printing of money by the Federal Reserve has indeed become a problem, but rather than stopping that, the government that you champion is encouraging it.
        No doubt there are greedy people in business, just as there are in the voting population, and just as there are in government. The best we can do about that is to insist that nobody can force us to buy their products, and that no business can use force to stop a competing business. That would be a legitimate role for government. But they could be much smaller and accomplish that.

        How do you avoid insurance cartels not governed by anti-trust laws? How do you stop the billions spent by lobbiests to pay off polititicians in both parties? How do you deal with a political party that refuses to even address acknoledged real problems? How do you get a handle on the untitled royalty that are selling the US out?
        Yeah we are spending outrageous amounts of money. I am the most conseravitive guy in the country when it comes to balanced budgets.
        Thank 8 years of an administration run by the mentally limited, for the mess were in. Houdini couldn’t cure this problem.
        There is only cure that I see. It’s called taxes. Not the small guy but the fat cats.

        Dave, I hate to remind you, but it was a Republican President who gave the money to the Big Banks and Investment companies, not the Dem’s. He asked for Congress to pass his request. I know you want to try and blame all of our financial problems on them, however you know that they didn’t have power of both houses from 1995 thru 2007, when the Dem’s got control. The tax payers of this country saved those too “BIG” to fail companies, who have not stopped the way they used to do business. You have to know that if the stock market was able to come from 6800 back over 10,000 in less than a year, this is just starting another bubble situation. Since people like Warren Buffet and others think we need to increase the tax rate for them, and they are advocating reinstating regulations, don’t you think they probably understand what is needed more than someone like you or me? If you had their success, maybe you would be a viable voice. Regan, stated ” we are going to let the Bull run”. He was not an economic genius, as history has shown. The Savings and Loan crisis was an example of the Bull crashing the market. History is our greatest teacher.

    I agree with most of the bloggers on this site. I do not want a public option of any kind in Health Care. Public option is just a way to get to a single payer plan run by the government, and we all know how great the government runs programs like medicaid, medicare, Post office, bank bailouts, G M bailout and on and on. I remember an insurance plan I had years ago that worked pretty good. I paid for half the premium and my employer paid half. When I or a member of my family ( 5 including my wife and kids )went to a doctor I paid 20% of all the costs up to $3,000 in a calendar year. If my medical expenses went over the $3,000 in a calender year the insurance picked up 100% of the costs. If my memory serves me right my insurance premiums I had to pay was about $75.00 a month for me and about the same (maybe a little more )for my employer. Most of the time I never had to pay out the $3,000 because my family was pretty healthy. But if a catrostrophic illness would have hit my family it would not have put us in the poor house. I realize this was a while back ( late 50′s or early 60′s ) and I only made a little over $600.00 per month. But what I am trying to get at is we all need to be responsible for ourselves and kids. I have medicare because I’m over 65 and the government makes it a requirement. I never asked for it and medicare should not have been passed. I am not well off or even close to being wealthy. But what a lot of people don’t seem to understand is the more the government gives you through your taxes (such as medicare) the more they get envolved in your life and the more they screw up the system. We need to get rid of the FED and no bailouts of any companies. Let them fail, that just means their not giving the public what they want at a reasonabe cost. Dump the Dept. of Education. I would be glad to take the school tax I pay and send kids to a private school. After they graduate I wouldn’t have to keep paying for their education like we do now. We would have more input in what is taught and not have to put up with the crap that is forced upon families now. I would also like to see a tax on what you spend and eliminate all other taxes. No write-offs of any kind for anybody. A family that makes $60,000 a year sure won’t buy as much as a family making hundreds of thousands or millions, but they would pay the same % but buying more would pay more taxes. Also a family could tighten their belt if they decide and not spend a much and save some money. There’s no doubt in my mind if government was run like the founding fathers intended our national budget could be cut buy 2/3nds and we would have much more freedom. Well, I am getting tired of mouthing off when it seems to be useless. I love my country more then I can say. I’m proud I served in the military. In God We Trust (something else the socialist are trying to do away with ) I just wish I was young enough to fight them off. Please excuse my grammer and spelling. He was promoted by the MSM (or is it the FM?) in the primaries, and as soon as he won the Republican nomination, the MSM dropped him like a hot potato.         And what facts Norm? The MSM spends more time fawning over Obama then scrutinizing him. Nobody knew how corrupt ACORN was until Foxnews reported events. Even then the FM did their best to defend them.

        I do not see the word “new” in those statements. Do you? Besides, health care reform IS a HUGE NEW program that will be run by the government. Furthermore, this discussion is about whether or not Obama is a liar and a socialist, not about whether or not Obama has accomplished anything. That’s a totally separate discussion. Go back to the beginning of the thread in this discussion (RoBoTech says:
        October 21, 2009 at 5:43 pm), and read down. I simply pointed out one of the many things that makes him a socialist, i.e. his support of a government-run health insurance system.

        If you meant to talk about whether or not Obama has implemented any new programs, then you should have stated it as such in a new or different thread.

      RoBo, are you aware that the Insurance companies have been benefiting from the anti-trust laws for over 60 years? Why do you think insurance can’t be sold across state lines? The insurance companies have a monopoly on health care. If you think they have your best interest at heart, how can you explain that during the past 10 years the premiums went up 131% while salaries only increased 38% ? For too long Corporate America has gotten subsidies, and are not allowing any new companies to compete. Insurance companies, sit in the same room and decide who will get what territories and what each of them will charge. They wrote the Medicare Advantage bill, which doesn’t let the government negotiate prices for the participants. It does pay IBM 400 million over 6 years for their retired employees pharma needs.There are about 50 companies who have the same deal. You are acting like the benefits were paid for. Wrong this was an unfunded bill. It was supposed to cost 400 Billion, in 2003 when passed, but in 2006 the GAO revised cost to be 1.1 trillion. If reform of Medicare is not done, there will be no medicare to complain about. Well, it could have already been killed as there were some who wanted to privatize it, and after our little market free fall, it would be worthless at this time. It is so funny that every one wants to keep this government run socialist program. While complaining the whole time about it.

    Unfortunately Snow and Collins almost always vote together. They always go with their own agenda and ignore the wishes of their constituents and really need to go. The only problem is the folks running against them were even worse. Hopefully we can get some solid choices in the future. Maine is fast becoming California East.

      If this Health Care Overhaul crap passes with the public option you can look for everyone to be on government health care it it 5-7 years. Why. because employers can dump there health care on the government at a lower cost or no cost.
      Where are all the doctors going to come from for so-call universal health care? My doctor tell me he is retiring if this overhaul passes. He said, “I will not be in a system where cost and age determine if you live or die”.
      My suggestion is that if you have any medical problems, get them taken care of now, don’t wait. You don’t want to be told, like some people here at the VA were told. Sorry we’re out of money until the first of the year. Here are a few Meds to hold you over.

    We all agree that there is a need for affordable health care and reform is necessary. Why must the whole system be reinvented? The President says $200 billion a year will be saved by eliminating medicaid waste and fraud. So why can’t Washington first address that issue and show us Americans that they can get the job done? The unions are screaming that the proposed tax on caddilac insurance is unfair to their members who gave up a lot at the bargaining table to get those bebefits. Same holds true for State and Municiple employees. So are we the working stiffs going to be stuck with the bills while the politicians exempt their special interest groups from the so called rules. And Obama said that he would not sign any bill that the American people did not have a chance to review at least 5 days before it reaches his desk. Was that senator correct in yelling out “You Lie”? I’m not sure we’re we headed on this healthcare reform, but if it is passed and it turns out like all the other big government programs, then I believe there will be a backlash against all politicians the likes that have not been seen since the American Revolution. Washington needs to get in touch with the American majority. We can only be pushed so far and then something has to break. I am appalled that this administration is attacking anyone and everyone who disagrees with their policies and initiatives. They are already starting to attack media outlets that don’t play by their rules. They are attacking law abiding citizens who gather to peacefully object to our government’s handling of the economy, immigration reform, health care reform and all the other stuff they are trying to ram down our throats. My America has surely changed in the last ten years but nothing on the scale of what I am seeing today. Everything has to be done yesterday. We don’t have time to read and debate bills. Anyone who disagrees is either a terrorist or right wing radical bent on destroying America. If you are a liberal, that’s your right. Same holds true for conservatives, independents and every other choice that is out there. So let me ask this final question: ” So exactly what are our brave service men and women fighting for in Afghanistan and Irag?”. I’d like to be able to explain to their parents how their sacrifices are ensuring all us at home our liberty and freedoms. Are you listening Washington? Or do you just not care?

America is nearly broke and he wants to raise taxes. We don’t have enough G.P. doctors now and Obama wants to legalize 12 to 20 million illegal aliens so they can get full government entitlements. He wants to take $404 billion dollars from Medicare and do away with Medicare Advantage programs to pay for his healthcare plan which will still leave millions uninsured, this takes away benefits from the elderly who paid into Social Security most of their lives and gives it to people who have not contributed anything. Next he will make every effort to take away our guns then he and his Czars can take over. Wake up America, vote them out in 2010 and 2012 before we lose our country.

    The public option is the only way to make the insurance industry “honest” (oxymoron intended). This will force the providers of insurance to become competitive by giving people a choice and thereby save the consumers and the economy billions $.

      A company with unlimited financial resources is not a competitor, it is a dominator. No private company could survive against the deep-pockets of the US government. So then there would be a monopoly with all the problems (and more) of any private monopoly because Big Government has something no private company has – the power to force consumers to buy their product no matter how inefficient it may be.

Big business, the insurance companies, have been given protection and have continued that protection due to the large payoffs that have been given to the politicians. Government can work, when those in power have and are held to a code of ethics. Do you not get it that the government is us? We are the government, and I have faith that Americans can and will do the right thing, we are a compassionate and giving people and even though you don’t like it, we will fight to save it. Anarchy is something none of us want. There are 120 million voters in this country and your party has maybe a million. We have had the opportunity to become Libertarians, since 1971 and for some reason we don’t cross that line. I have voted for Ron Paul in 1988 and Ross Periot, however, I knew they could not take over this country. Maybe it is because we never get an answer as how would you make the changes and how would we function without those laws you want to remove?

        Name a single country where after collapse a Dictator didn’t take control? Do you think the military with all their weapons is just going to disappear? Our money may become greatly devalued due to the excessive printing but the physical goods just don’t disappear. Of course, over time, they will eventually get consumed.
        And if the military does take over, guess who they side with? Mostly with the people you don’t like.
        The only chance Obama would have of retaining control would be to invite foreign military into the battle (which is common throughout history). This is a man who really cares about nobody but himself.

      Harold, certainly you know that it took us ten years to get to this point and the odds are that we can’t wave a magic wand and fix it in a mere 12 months. Hell, we can’t even get the Republicans on board to get new regulations in place, today three of them stated they want to totally deregulate the banking industry. That is just exactly what we need, the Banks having the ability to gouge us just as badly as the Insurance companies have been. A 3.8 percent annual raise only goes so far. Are you voting out the Republicans you voted in?

        How come is it that you Liberals advocate more regulations when the previous series after series of regulations haven’t worked?
        I could see you as a scientist: “Hmmm, those ingredients didn’t achieve the desired result. I know, I will add more, that will surely succeed!”
        The only place for the government to get involved is when the businesses lie to their customers or otherwise defraud them. All regulations do is add more cooks to the kitchen which costs more money and fewer desirable goods being produced. As the cost of the goods go up, those who are uninformed demand more regulation which again causes fewer goods produced and more cost as a result. It is a vicious cycle until the economy finally collapses.

        So, you are saying that you think the anti-trust laws should be left in place for the insurance companies to retain a monopoly on the industry? Wow, That isn’t capitalism at it’s best. That is protectionism. That is allowing the corporate entities to have a stranglehold on the citizens. Since the current financial sitution can be tied directly to the deregulation of the banking industry in 1999, then yes I agree that we should go back to the laws that protected us since the Great Depression. When we deregulated the Saving and Loan industry,in 1986 we had a similiar crisis, and we didn’t learn from that did we? No!!! we didn’t. You want to believe that people will do the right, honest and moral thing while conducting business, yet our politicans are a prime example of why we need laws and regulations to protect the citizens from corruption. Greed and power is something that has to be regulated. Just like not giving too much power to the President or the Congress, regulations and laws like the Constitution,keep us safe from those who would use money aka: power to control everything.

        Name a single documented case of Monopoly in a free market. It is a myth promulgated by Big Government to justify the growth of the only real Monopoly in this country, the US Government.
        A malignant monopoly could not exist in a free market without the force of government to protect it. The only way a company could achieve monopoly (in a free market) is for the company to keep its prices so tight and low that no other company would want to compete. If that was the case, who would complain about low prices? You have no idea what you are talking about; you are just spouting common Liberal Urban Myths.
        The Savings and Loan collapse was directly a result of the FSLIC. When people and companies are protected by insurance, then they become sloppy in their financial dealings. Sloppy loans, just as what caused our current situation. And in both cases the cause was Big Government meddling.
