They could lower their rates as low as they wanted. If they run out of money they will either raise taxes or incur more debt. There is no way for them to lose. So, of course, they will drive the other insurance companies out of business. The government can’t admit a single-payer government-run system as their ultimate goal any more than Obama could admit that he is a left-wing zealot during his campaign.

So, let’s just skip the horse shit and go right for a single payer system. Then you would have a real agruement that the government has taken over healthcare. Dave you only have to ask yourself one question, is it good for the people or is it good for the insurance companies? Very easy question. Dave, I know you won’t understand this but the E&O insurance required to fund your own company would require over 300 to contribute lump sum payment of 3,000.00 plus the premiums would be around 650.00 a month. 8000.00 a year is a little high for most of the people who need the insurance, as their average pay is 27,000. before taxes. We are also looking at a Home Owners Insurance increase of 28%. Since the average salary increase was below 3%, it is impossible to start your own company. I know as we tried and that is why the Governor got a program going, which is not successful either. Nobody can afford to join it. One in four in this state don’t have insurance. Yep it is too expensive, so it only has 4300 in membership. Self insurance is a dream in this country, or do you think that “you” are the only one who ever had that idea? You actually insult the majority of people who have worked for years trying to get co-ops going. The insurance companies have it locked down and only those that have, will continue to receive.

Those of us old enough remember when most made a living wage and needed, wanted or qualified for these plans. Government is subsidizing the companies wage and benefit packages now. I also know that even before we entered the war, the increased defense spending and need for money to support the opponents of the Axis aggression let to the passage in 1940 of two taxes that increased individual and corporate taxes. It also increased the number of taxpayers from 4 million in 1939 to 43 million in 1945. If you studied the tax increases you would see that usually a war increased our tax rate. A hint that we were in trouble is when Bush cut taxes, and then started two wars without repealing those cuts. history is a wonderful thing if you are awake and learn from it.

FDR was president from 1933 to 1945. The Depression lasted from 1929 to 1940. So he presided over 7 years of economic calamity.

The Keynesian theory of government spending as being an economic booster was soundly trounced when Jimmy Carter blew up our economy after which he pronounced “We must tighten our belts”. Prosperity is inversely proportional to the amount of government regulations. You will experience these things yourself soon. Put your seatbelt on! I don’t work for an insurance company. I have had a medical insurance policy for only 2 years of my life because a divorce court ordered it. I have been to the doctor only about a dozen times in my life. I take care of myself with supplements and good diet (I’m 60). I’m the kind of guy who would rather die than force someone else to carry me. I’m not as brave as the people who gave us our freedom, but I strive for that goal rather than be like a large portion of our current population who would climb on top of others to survive.

Hope you do not get sick before you reach 65, a serious illness could bankrupt you before you are eligible for medicaid, and they you will expect us all to pay for that won’t you, unless you cannot get medical services because you have no insurance and end up dead as the 45,000 that do each year because they cannot get insurance and not all choose that as you do. You act like you can control these things and I hope reality does not force it on you that you cannot, illness or injuries are most often out of our control. You are not the superman you often imply here.

There are many ways to really reduce the cost of health care and they all involve less government. Big Government is the problem, not the solution.

It is you and yours that are the real problem, Big Government has done a far better job with Medicare that the private sector has done with the under 65 crowd in the last forty years but you still support those guys despite their ineptness, hating your government is tantamount to hating yourself as it is WE the people who are the government and hating oneself makes one bitter and angry and incapable of functioning normally. What we need is good and better government and you want only to destroy it. That is what Obama is working for but because he is stepping on some rich toes he is getting spattered with all their mud, but it will not stick on him, he is too smart for that.

I agree with eyes and John, I suppose it is different in different areas but I know in mine uncompensated care in the EM is paid for by the county and the county property taxpayers pay for it. But much of every persons insurance is effected by higher premium costs because of higher medical charges to cover those who cannot pay. I thought about 60% of personal bankruptcies were due to the individual’s medical bills but not sure. Thanks for the straight talk John, many of us see the issue the way you do and it needs to be said. Too much said here is because so few here really understand the problem and they let their biases dictate what they say instead of facts.

Smilee, Florida ranks right behind Texas as the worst in the nation, on coverage. one in every four does not have insurance. We have more for profit hospitals my area than New York city. Trust me, we aren’t that large in population. We have limited insurance providers, and have a company, WellCare, which has defrauded the fed government, along with state of Fl. and is only paying a fine. Just typical of the private healthcare in our state.

Maybe, John, you need to inform the 2/3 of your colleages who think the Health Care Bill should be scrapped. I would expect more from a highly educated man. Health care costs have climbed consistently for the last 35 years since I have been keeping track. Has government involvement decreased during that time period? Of course not.
Being a health care provider does not make you an expert on overall expenditures in ours and other countries. My solution to the high health care costs is to stay away from you guys as much as possible. In fact doctors have done more damage to my family than they’ve done good.

How about the premiums increasing by 131% while the salaries only rose by 38%. How does that work for middle class America?
