Wow George you must have never been to a VA hospital because the care our veterans get sucks. The only universal health care in the US for Native Americans sucks. It isn’t that we don’t need reform and regulations, because we sorely do. It is that our government could not manage their way out of a wet paper bag in any industry without making it go broke within a relatively short amount of time. Want proof look at social security the only benefit program in the US that actually makes any money, but our government decided to borrow from it heavily causing it too to go broke. France has already admitted their system is going broke, they are looking at inventive ways of cutting costs, and some of their ideas are great. Canada has a great health care generally but why is it that many of the cancer patients run to the US because they can’t get proper care? No system is perfect like your suggesting, yes they have great benefits just as ours has great benefits, it is the benefits your willing to give up vs the benefits you want is the debate in a nut shell.

Just think for a minute what you said. If you really believe that, you, Lush Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, Carl Rove, W. Bush, etc., etc., etc., can even understand what these people represent then show me what ya got.

Emergency rooms are just what they say they are. They are like a triage center. They make the first judgements of who needs emergency that fastest and the most. They intervene as much as is necessary promptly and then send you where more and proper care for your complaint is available so that they can continue to meet emergencies. Why ever would you go to an emergency room for the kind of ailments you describe??? With Medicare you can self-refer to any doctor you with to see anytime. Blue Shield is the most expensive stuff around. With-it people all know that the AARP supplement is the best around. Hannity and Co. are not going to tell you these things because they have axes to grind.
If you waited 6 months to see a doctor, you are a sap. Your individualism is a joke. You are not thinking with individual reason. You are following the herd of people who are taking advantage of you.

Response: My name is Pat and I am an American.

The first you posted this note I apologized because I was afraid I had been remiss. After that I began to sign each post. If you are not finding my name of post now, it is not because I don’t level with you, or whatever else it is your are thinking.

Is this all you have to say–word for word? And which socialism would you be referring to?

Glad to see that now all Americans have been duped by BO. Anyone thinking that a Government run health plan will work in this country must not be looking at history or at the way our government can run anything, especially the bunch that is in their right now. This plan will cost us trillions, deliver very little, make the czars and congressman rich, and leave the truly needing without the needed care because the government run plan and committe appointed to judge cases worthy will deny care to more people than will receive care.

I have been involved with trying to work with a Government run program for the people working in government run facilities that have been promised compensation for injuries incurred from exposures doing their jobs with either radioactive substances, chemicals, etc. Congress created the program, allocated at least a billion to go to the people or their families who had received injuries or died from the exposures. The administration of this program is top heavy and ten years later, I only know of three people that has received anything from the program. More people have died waiting than are receiving help. I personally have submitted tons of documentation and have had to pay for tests and medicines for the last twenty years. To date, I have not received anything from this program and am still fighting because I need to continual submit more documentation.

Don’t be deceived by this Congress. They need to take some management lessons and by all means, don’t let the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac folks design a plan. Chris Dodd, Barney Franks and others are still lining their pockets from the housing scams they refused to regulated in 2005, so why would anyone trust them to design anything?

In New Mexico, I am already taxed to provide free shot clinics, free health care for illegal immigrants and provide free health care at the university hospitals for anyone that can not afford it now. Why do we even need another free plan?

People, it is time we Americans take our country back. This health care package they are trying to push on us is non-sense. They ( the people in Washington ) are trying to pass this pkg. so they can tell us what Doctor we can see, what clinic we can go to, and then they can get their on Dr’s to give us medication that will put us 6 feet under. Like the VA Hospital in OBAMA’S home state of Illinois did. They killed a few VETERANS so that they, ”the Government wouldn’t have to pay out the money” and use it on their on health care. The Pres. and all in Washington have the best Ins. Coverage in the world, and we ”the people” are paying it for them. Why don’t they give us the same coverage? They had rather use our money on doing away with our Constitution Rights.

Just stop this medical care reform. Insurance companies need better regulation, true. Tort reform needs to happen and the lawyers need to make a fee for service like everyone else, not a parasitic, huge percentage. Medical doctors are not the caring investigators they once were. It is all about drugs, drugs and more drugs. Tighten up some of these problems and things will be better. I am weary of paying for everyone to have expensive drugs and unnecessary surgeries because some doc read in his cook book that this is what was successful in at least 30% of cases. (Maybe we just can do without 80% of these docs and use the Internet to diagnose ourselves. They can become the treating automatons they want to be. ) If people would use the alternative ideas for most of their functional complaints, the medical docs could use the drug/surgery route to better effect on those who truly need that type of care.

Why aren’t our parents and grandparents speaking out? They should be outraged! Don’t they realize that this health care bill amounts to state-sponsored euthanasia for the elderly? The Obamanoids will show them no more compassion than they show for unborn children. Wake up, grandpa!

Our Medical system is the best in the world. People come from all over the world for treatment. I know that our system has some problems, but this is no reason to change the complete system. All we need to do is address the problems. We do not need the Goverment to do this. Our goverment has a record of taking good systems and and leaving them in a miss management condition.
Our present goverment seems to have a system that talks the talk but does not give any thought on how to walk, the walk. So far this year, they miss managed the everything they have done.

It is easy to see from the many Americans who have lived in Europe that the universal health care system in these countries is far far far superior to the U S profit based system. Let me add that I lived in Japan for over 30 years and found Japan’s universal health care system also far superior to the U S. First, EVERYONE IS COVERED. Waiting time is no longer than in the U S for typical appointments. The cost is a very small co pay of $1. to $5.00!

It should be obvious that the U S Health Care industry, the health care insurance companies in particular, are holding U S health care hostage. They all voice such platitudes such as they don’t believe in government programs. Unfortunately, the real reason is that so many U S Senators and Congressmen are in the pockets of the health industry. Their “campaign contrutions”, lets face it, are bribes, clear and simple. The scare tactics they employ about “socialized medicine” etc are simply BS, just like the scare tactics Bush and Cheney used to justify the Iraq war.

Medicare and the Veterans administration healtcare are government run and I’ve found them more efficient and give better care.

Wake up, dumb Americans; you are so naive! Stop listening to the scare tactics. We are in urgent need of universal health care! Obama is facing a formidable vested interest barage. Help him to succeed!

Obama, doesn’t have a clue as to what he wants as far as health care all he wants is a take over of our right to choose and to tax all of us who work to death!! All of these bills that are being passed with such rapidity is a take over of our beloved country! Health Care is another take over, do not fool yourselves this is not going to be pretty this is going to cost lives. Obama believes in infanticide, and now he wants to implement genocide.

Obama, says he wants racial equality, but I believe that he hates the white person, and he is trying to create class warfare, and racial unrest in this country. There are always going to be pple who play the race card but Obama plays it all the time. case in point his friend Gates who was arrested because he refused to keep his mouth shut, and Obama, called the police officer stupid. or he acted stupidly.

So I hope all the pple who voted for Obama cause they wanted change know they are going to get it as Obama is trying to change this country by taking away all of our rights. Health Care is going to take over 30% of our national economy, and we are all going to hate it. If you have insurance now you won’t have it, as this bill won’t allow it.

When the president(?) was finally asked by a reporter in a public meeting if he, the Congress and the exempts would give up their tax paid government plans in order to conform to the national health care that he was trying to sell the public, the answer was “MAYBE”.

So the snake oil he is selling is not good enough for he and the parasites to drink but it’s fine for you and me? It is understandable why these people are held in such low esteem. Mr. Obama, go pound salt!

Obama ramed the stimulous package down our throats. I said NO. It was voted on Yes. Now we say NO to the health care package. What are the odds it will pass? When did we not get a voice anymore? Who is in charge? I write, I email, I call my representatives, it doesn’t seem to matter. I’m just saying.

A new Rasmussen Reports poll shows that President Barack Obama’s rating in Rasmussen’s Presidential Approval Index has hit negative double digits for the first time.

The survey found that 29 percent of voters strongly approve of Obama’s job performance, while 40 percent strongly disapprove.

Rasmussen calculates its Presidential Approval Index by subtracting the “strongly disapprove” figure from the “strongly approve” figure. As a result, Obama’s overall score is a minus-11. That’s the first time his rating has reached negative double digits.

Other results of the poll:

49 percent somewhat approve of Obama’s performance.

50 percent disapprove of Obama’s performance.

76 percent see Obama as liberal.

48 percent see Obama as very liberal.

54 percent primarily blame former President George W. Bush for America’s economic woes.

25 percent say the U.S. economy has been aided by the economic stimulus package.

53 percent oppose the Democratic healthcare reform package.

37 percent say deficit reduction should be Obama’s top priority.

20 percent say healthcare should be Obama’s top priority.

The poll is based on answers from 1,500 likely voters. It has a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.

American Health Care: The View From Expatriate Who Came Home

    As the health care reform debate revs up, the vested interests in the status quo warn against any alterations that might damage “the world’s best health care system.” In the 1980′s I was a temporary resident in Great Britain, first as a graduate student, later as a pastor.
    I’ll never forget feeling anxious about how I would survive the “socialized” medicine against which I had been repeatedly warned. What I discovered instead was an absence of the anxieties that American families continue to endure 20 years later: worries over losing coverage or being able to afford quality care when it’s urgent.
    These nagging dreads were simply nonexistent among the people with whom I was now living and serving. Of course they had concerns about health, but they were of an entirely different order.
    What helps me explain the difference to Americans who have not lived in Europe is an analogy with the public school system. Setting aside for the moment the important debates about funding and the possibilities of private options, the fact remains that Americans simply assume their kids will attend school through high school as a universal entitlement of democracy. We can’t imagine any child being denied an education because of a parent’s misfortune in losing his or her job for whatever reason. The British (along with the rest of Europe) regard health care the way we regard education.
    Gradually, however, I saw something deeper at work in a society where everyone had a right to health care. I witnessed how the privilege of universal health care had awakened a common sense of duty toward my neighbor and mutual respect for one another, causing a tangible awareness that everyone was treated with a fundamental equality, not as an abstract motto repeated on patriotic occasions but as practical as walking into the local doctor’s office or hospital when you or a family member were ill. In other words, my personal self-worth was bound together with a respect for my neighbor’s worth (and health) as well.
    Of course, universal health care doesn’t guarantee that British children (or parents) don’t get sick, any more than universal education means all kids graduate at the top of their class. But since the devastation of World War II, the British (and the rest of Europe) became convinced that health care belonged alongside education as an intrinsic quality of life in a democratic society. It had become a fundamental obligation of any government that serves and protects its people, to be supported and protected along with education, law enforcement, fire departments and national defense. For all her admiration of Ronald Reagan, Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher never dreamed of eliminating this fundamental part of what it meant to be British. She would have been swept from office.
    As a working pastor in that culture for eight years, it’s hard for me to express to Americans how good it felt to know that everyone in my church (and in my city, for that matter) received quality health care, whether rich or poor, over-employed, underemployed or unemployed. It gave us a sense of mutual support that cut across class distinctions, economic levels and religious differences. In over a decade I never met anyone – not a doctor, a nurse, a young person or someone elderly – who envied the American system. It was quite the opposite. To them we seemed trapped in a system that was too full of self-interest, fatally constructed to profit from the sick rather than to serve them. In recent years as a college teacher I’ve taken many student groups to countries throughout Europe, and repeatedly the Europeans have expressed to me how strange our health care system appears to them as a contradiction of America’s founding promise to provide a government of the people by the people and for the people.
    ”Your government has ignores that it pledges life as well as liberty. Doesn’t that imply access to good health care,” they would ask. “Surely health care is a basic prerequisite for any ‘pursuit of happiness’ worthy of your founding ideals.”
    It isn’t only the British, with their single-payer scheme. From Spain to Germany to the Scandinavians (and back again to our neighbor Canada) maturing democracies have implemented a variety of strategies to cover the entire population. Again and again, this practice concretely demonstrates to fellow citizens how mutual respect in a maturing democracy has migrated from the ballot box once every couple of years to the family living space of each citizen every day of their lives.
    Paradoxically, our current financial mismanagement and Wall Street-run health care inefficiencies may have brought us to a crisis that is our best opportunity to repair the black hole at the center of our social fabric, one into which 45 million of our fellow Americans have fallen and which swallows more every month. There are special interests who paper over this black hole with the label “freedom of choice.” Together with the inertia of the discouraged they collude to deny for this country what every other advanced democracy in the world gratefully enjoys. But surely it is possible for Americans to weave together a health care system that exemplifies our historic “can-do” attitude and binds us together as citizens committed to ingenuity, respect and compassion.
    As an American who has lived abroad, I believe the implementation of universal coverage is a quality-of-life issue whose time has come. But it hinges on whether we have evolved a critical mass with sufficient empathy to realize that my neighbor’s health care, like my neighbor’s education, profoundly affects my own; that it is in our mutual best interest to have a health care system that serves us all, especially the most vulnerable among us.

I have lived in Italy for over 50 years and can testify that the health care under a state program is very, very good. Doctors here are on the cutting edge of treatment as they have a vast experience, given the number of cases they see. Thirty years ago my husband was successfully treated for cancer and given intereron injections for a year…FREE! Last year my brother suffered a stroke and has re gained his health and confidence, thanks to the excellent supervision by his hospital medical team…FREE Ok, so the food might not be 4 star… but then again – your sick, not on holiday!

As another American who has lived/worked in Germany (also as a pastor) for 8 years and now with a daughter who lives/works in Belgium, I totally agree with the comments made by Mr. Newell. In addition, I have taken choirs that I direct on tours to Europe and have, on a few occasions, had to take some of the young singers to the emergency room – one with a broken arm. No one asked any questions, such as, “what is your insurance company, what does your coverage include or who will pay for this?” Treatment was offered immediately and never was a bill presented. Try doing that in the US with a European choir on tour in the US! It is more than high time that one of the leading nations of the world offers the same possibility for the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness. Thank you, Mr. Newell for your cogent insight.

I am also an American expatriate, but I have lived in the Netherlands for the last twelve years. My experience mirrors that of Dr. Newell. I have never known anyone who was denied medical coverage here, nor anyone who worried about their coverage. You simply show up to your family doctor, who has drop-in hours every single day, if something is wrong. He helps determine the next steps, whether that be himself, a prescription, a specialist. Even after seeing him or a specialist and/or filling a prescription, no money changes hands and there is no deductible. The supposed horrors of socialized medicine, e.g., waiting lists, denied coverage, substandard care, have been propaganda promoted by the for-profit health care industry who stands to loose their substantial profits if universal coverage is implemented. I am planning to move back to the US this year, and my biggest fear about the move is already the kind of health care coverage we will find there. Some Americans believe that their health care system is so superior to the worlds, yet no one else in the world is envying them.

Again, thank you Mr Newell. Let me add my voice to yours. I have spent 30 years living and working in Europe (France, Germany, Spain & the UK) and have enjoyed the excellent care of the health systems in each country plus others. Working in the medical field, I have also worked with doctors and members of the medical profession… all of whom support the health systems in their country. The doctors and nurses are well trained (some of them better than that of US staff) and are well paid. They respect their patients and the emphasis is on preventive health and staying well. Prescriptions are covered as are all the incidental costs. Wait lists vary in some areas but are no different from that of the USA, and in some cases are even quicker. I just had my knee replaced. It was scheduled in less than week after our ( my surgeon and myself) decision. I was in the hospital (2 bed ward with private bath, telephone etc) for 3 days and returned home with all the support equipment and medical help needed. I was walking after a week without canes. Physical therapy continued for 4 months. All expenses including transportation, home support, medicines and equipment were covered under the UK NHS progam. Nine months later I was back on the tennis courts playing doubles at my local Club. This is normal for us in Europe. My wife and I once considered retiring in the States but decided against it as there is no medical support program available in the States other than the insurance companies and that is “iffy” and expensive at best. Aftere considering the quality of life, the medical support, education plus the opportunities to enjoy life, we prefer to live in and enjoy Europe. Americans deserve better than they are getting from their system and government. Pity getting from you system

My mother who lives in Canada got very sick a few days ago. She had an ulcer in her colon that was bleeding profusely. She went to a small hospital north of Montreal. She was on the surgey table the day after, receiving the best possible care. Her doctor gave me a call in North Carolina (where I have been living for 20 years) to let me know of what he had done and of her good recovery from surgery. And of course she was not charged a penny. It is quite disingenuous to hear those adds on CNN and other TV channels in the US portraying the Canadian system as “Long delays, no choice of doctors, and care denied.” All in the service of scaring gullible Americans from the “Public option” (a far cry from universal payer) now on the table for deliberation in congress. Some years ago I had a heart attack in Laguardia Airport, was taken to a hospital, had to wait a full week for angioplasty before I could return home. All through the week in the hospital, as doctors were looking for another hospital that could do the procedure, I was asked for my insurance papers (being told not to worry, that with insurance I was assured of receiving the care I needed). The hospital that finally did the procedure misread my insurance card as provided by Blue Shield Blue Cross of New York (I am a resident of NC). Needless to say that coverage was denied. Two days after my return home I received a call from a Collection agency: They wanted immediately from me $130,000! The first question they asked me was: “Sir do you own a house?” I said no, but had I had one they were ready to take it from me! It took me two months to get things straight. In the meanwhile they continued harassing me non stop. I can only thank God I did not have another heart attack.

My parents were refugees to England from Czechoslovakia in 1939; My father died when I was four. My mother worked morning to night as a dressmaker, but without socialized medicine and excellent grammar schools, she would have have been able to provide a decent life for us. I had never heard of anyone being denied medical care for any reason until I came to the United States at the age of seventeen.

Its time for the main stream media to become involved. For a century insurance companies and the AMA have lied to us, giving false information about government run health care. They have been backed up by those in government who feed at their hand. This cycle of payoffs to congress in exchange for false testimony has to stop. The media must become involved in the national debate. Tell the truth. Its high time for the American news outlet to tell the truth and stop the “government run health care is communism” scare. As stated in the article the government runs education and its worked out well. As a matter of fact the government runs a lot of things we take for granted and we just don’t seem to notice. I was working in Zimbabwe a decade ago and a man I was working with became terribly ill. We had to drive about a half an hour to a hospital not knowing if he would live or die in the car. We got to the hospital and he was treated so well we were surprised. He stayed in the hospital for a week and was completely cured of a serious bacterial infection common in that part of Africa. When I was picking him up we were asking where to go to pay the bill. They didn’t know what we were talking about. After a while they explained that there was not bill, he could just go.

And another one I have lived in Prague for 21 years – and I have learned that just as there are bad stories here about health care, there are bad stories in the US. Medicine is not foolproof, so no matter what the system, we will always be able to find an example of when a treatment failed or a doctor misdiagnosed someone with tragic consequences. That being said, I love the Czech health system. They have some of the world’s most advanced heart and cancer treatments, as well as some of the world’s best MRI equipment, including a non-invasive colonoscopy! Part of the problem is the myth that Americans have the most advanced technology in the world. It is interesting that one of the Czechs MRIs may make it so patients having brain surgery could be put to sleep (not permanently), and I think that Americans would be surprised to know that after 9/11 and Katerina, the US sent bodies to Bosnia for identification because they have the world’s top labs. There are a lot of advantages to state controlled medicine – and I think that the Republican strategy of finding singular horror stories as evidence of the flaw of the whole system is a logical fallacy that the press SHOULD easily see through.

Like others in this forum, I lived abroad (the UK) for a while and can’t tell you how good it was to know that I could go to the doctor when I needed to without worrying about cost or a doctor’s availability. I got good, prompt care, something I can’t say I get here even with “good” health insurance. Most Americans have never lived abroad. Please don’t fall for the horror stories.

The Pharmas spend more on advertising than they do on research — think about that one… We need single payer healthcare for everyone in this country — we need to take these $50 million dollar Insurance Company executives and put some of that money into the care for a few hundred thousand children who think “seeing the doctor” is going to the emergency room.

Of course we expect waste and fraud to be severely dealt with,but removing Corporate(Insurance/Pharmaceutical & other medical interest)financial input from our Congress is paramount to the changes we seek!

I did my PhD in Canada and lived there from 1976 through 1980. Here is how health care works up there. You register, get a card that identifies you as eligible for care. If you get sick or injured you go to a hospital or a doctor of your choice and you get care. There is no bill and everything is covered. What the Right says about delays and long waiting are all lies. In fact I have waited in my doctor’s office in the US when I had a scheduled appointment much longer than I ever did in Nova Scotia. We need single payer, after all we are the only supposedly First World country that doesn’t have it.

I am a surviving victim of Frist family operated strictly for profit federally funded through tax dollar HCA health(?)care University Hospital Denver CO where they turned what should have been a 2 day procedure for a stress induced bowel obstruction into a 30 day nightmare with 14 in ICU for post-op infections after they botched and had to repeat surgery 5 times and without informed consent implanted a discontinued FDA recalled surgical mesh in 2002 for which I will til death bear a grapefruit diameter hideous foul smelling non-healing permanent open wound and the worst part Bush blocked litigation and even though the SCOTUS ruled for patients a few months ago nobody will lift a finger to make me whole for this atrocity in rural America!

I’m an American expat resident of the UK for almost ten years. All in all, for what it is, the socialised medicine works well. As with most things political, the richer areas of the UK get better service and more modern hospitals; however, no one is left out of the picture. The average person isn’t facing bankruptcy if the fall ill, and no one is sent out on the street to die for lack of insurance or funds. Of course, socialised medicine comes at a cost to the taxpayer, but in the long run, if you’re faced with a catastrophic illness or life-threatening injury, you don’t have to sell your soul to pay the medical bills. And you don’t have to fight with an insurance company who is more concerned with satiating the shareholders lust for fat dividends.

It’s far too late for B O to be specific (what a transparency-loving guy). When someone has as many things to hide as does b o, it pays to keep details in the dark. Most likely, no one in this screwy administration understands b o’s health reform. Passing this self-destructive legislation in a hurry is more important than doing it right. B O and his flunkies have no self-respect or credibility. Their
hatred of openness is worth a TV series or a novel. Never before has an administration dared to use a Ponzi scheme as a blueprint. Seniors, B O wants you to view suicide as a sacrifice. Tell him what he can do with it, and where he can put it.

Obamas’ “health care.”
Obama’s vagueness is intended because he certainly doesn’t want you to know what he has in store for seniors, the uninsured and the poor. He, his wife, and his PR man, Axelrod, are the undisputed master s of hiding bad motives under grandiose euphemistic rhetoric. So if you want to know what’s in store for the tired, the poor and the huddled masses yearning to get well under the Obamas’ health care plans, see what they have done in the recent past. First, google Urban Health Initiative and you will be led to the U of Chicago Hospital’s home page which describes in the most heavenly prose how the U of C’s UHI matches up indigent uninsured ER patients with neighborhood clinics and health care providers suited to their specific needs. Beautiful, n`cest pas? And, who would have believed it, this UHI also frees up the UC’s ER and beds of the impecunious and unwashed for the Blue Cross crowd. What a win-win coincidence. No wonder that this brain child of hosp. v.p. Michelle Obama got her a whopping big raise as the ebb of the ER’s blood was stopped and the millions of donations and federal grants came pouring in. Hubby was a senator at the time. Now, as you read the hypnotic prose, a feeling of déjà vu may come over you. Yes you have heard the same drivel before from the mouth of our President. Why? because the President’s mouthpiece, David (the shadow) Axelrod is also the PR man for the U of C’s UHI.
Now, before you lose the warm fuzzy glow of the UHI’s description., go to Fox news and look at Ainsley Earhart’s expose on the UHI, including the remarks of Senator Grassley and the South Chicago congressman Bobby Rush. I saw this first on Hannity on 7/22. The UHI it appears, is nothing more than a euphemistically promoted program of patient dumping. Just for one example, a mother brings her 12 yr old son, freshly badly mauled by a pit bull to the ER for much needed emergency treatment. But what does he get: an injection and the door. His mother, knowing better, drives for an hour to another hospital where his lacerations are properly sutured and dressed.
I’m 70 with heart disease, diabetes, spinal stenosis — worst of all I’m afflicted with conservative individualism. The wife has MS and together we pay 400 per month for our Blue Cross medicare supplement with choice of docs and hospitals – no deductible or co-pay. I’ve seen the buildings housing the neighborhood clinics to which the U of C “refers” its patients under its magnanimous UHI. They look like things Tony Rezko couldn’t sell.
So I see myself and my wife sitting in one of these dumps hoping to get another stent for my heart or a gamma knife procedure for her trigeminal nerve. I’ve been gripping my referral form from the Obama health experts, Drs. Kervorkian and Murray, anxiously awaiting our fates. So, after a two hour wait, we walk out with two Tylenol tabs and a follow up in six months.
If this goes through and Blue Cross gives up, I’m a walking dead man. Why ARPA is falling for this tripe, I have no idea.
