The selection process for leadership aspirants in each of our two dominant parties produces the usual suspects, typically uninspired by the visions that compel the population to care about (love) our Nation. Bush and the right-wing of the Republican Party is a perfect example – a disastrously inept leader whose loyal proponents support him as though they have sold their souls for power. I can really appreciate Teresa’s saying “I am not a Democrat” – yet being frustrated by the work of many Republicans. This is also common amongst my friends, friends who have very lofty ideals that they wish the Republican Party really acted from, instead of the harsh expediency of these last 8 years visionless. Maybe what has catalyzed so many non-Republicans about Obama is his standing for an ideal – however revolting many of us may find his notions. Even if he was just posturing, the “posturing” appears as though he believes his own rhetoric – PASSIONATELY. Perhaps the reason these last 8 years were a nightmare for many on the Right-Wing who supported Bush was not Congress nor the Media, but Bush himself not Passionately believing his own Rhetoric – from his Bumper Sticker sound bites like Clint Eastwood affecting “We’ll kick your ass” declarations, to economic policies clearly expanding Federal influence after the previous Federal influence only expanded the profits of the financial meltdowns perpetrators (at the expense of the middle class) I never was “moved” by The MAN.
Maybe if he was able to look the camera in the eye (sic) and from his gut just say “Your Damn right we want that Oil, and your damn right some of our own fellas are gonna get killed making sure we get it!” I could have honored the guy. If you are referring to abortion, gay, and perversion rights, then you need to study history (and the Bible). You will be surprised to find out that neither of these is new – existed for thousands years, condemned by the Bible, and rejected by both Jewish and Xn ethics.

Hmm that’s odd, I don’t know of any Christians who call themselves Xn’s. I am a Christian and greatfully so, however I understand that not everyone believes in the same things. So, since God him self doesn’t force anyone to believe in him or follow him then neither can we. Lead by example, not by telling people to turn or burn (as the saying goes). If you tell people the truth, they will know it but it is up to each individual what they do with that truth. You can cause more damage putting people down. This should be mandatory reading for anyone wishing to register to vote in this country.

A lot of terms are being thrown around these days regarding the political future of our country. Fear-mongering, finger-pointing, crisis managing, blame, promises made, promises broken, and insecurity of the people in the country all seem to be the order of the day. Too many people are fearful about what is happening now and what is going to happen next.

Here is a list of definitions for various (not all) forms of government that is well documented on websites and in history books. If you want more go to a search engine and type in the keyword you are interested in knowing more about.

This information is just information and facts readily available to everyone in any public library, history book or internet.

There are so many debates going on between people that have strong beliefs one way or the other, but sadly, many with the most closely held beliefs often have not actually read up on this information. Too many voters do not know their own parties’ core platform values. So, read it, try to learn something, and decide what you believe in with facts, or at least be sure you know the definition of the terms you toss around before you get into a debate with someone.

CAPITALISM:
* An economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations, especially as contrasted to cooperatively or state-owned means of wealth.

MONARCHY:

He was the subject of our current Secretary of State’s thesis at Wellesley College and she truly admired Mr. Alinsky. The books are chilling when compared to what is happening in our country today.

Neither of you responded to my question as to whether seeking the highest return for stockholders (as is required of corporations) is conservative or liberal. In my experience, conservatives just hate to even consider this question, probably because of the huge implications. As to the financial condition of newspapers, there are many reasons for that, I’d be interested in how that relates to the accusation that the press is liberal. I don’t consider MSNBC or NBC to be a great example of being liberal, either. When was the last time either of them did an indepth examination of the conservative war on working people, tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas, Haliburton offshoring to avoid paying taxes (on DOD contracts, no less, paid for with tax dollars), takeover of family farms by corporate agribusiness?

That is called taking responsibility for one’s self. Unfortunately government fails to see that need.

David, That would be peachy-keen if everybody that has a wood burning fireplace could afford to upgrade to a new fireplace insert. However, the reality is that is not the case, there are many people on fixed incomes these days and not because they want a government handout, for example the elderly. I do agree with what you said about being self sufficient but the reality of the times in which we now currently live makes it more difficult for some vulnerable persons. Persons who are in a needy position not by their own doing. I’m all for being green but when somebody doesn’t have heat because they can’t afford the jacked up prices, well then how green is it really? It’s hard to worry about the eco system when your freezing your a$$ off.

Kristan, it is far cheaper to install the wood burning stove or insert versus continuing sending money up the chimney. If the fireplace is the primary source of heat, the savings will pay for the stove or insert over a very short time. If the fireplace is not the primary source of heat, shut it down, close the flue you are needlessly wasting heat and needed money.

If one is truly freezing their assets off I would expect them to also become motivated to do something about it- unless they already are on the government dole.

My sister had polio as a child. She has no memory of running with other kids. On her own, she worked and paid for college including a masters degree, created from scratch the largest, most respected foster home agency in southern Ohio, gives speeches across the US, has reared foster kids in her own home as well as adopting a mentally challenged (alcoholic teen mother) son, reared her own daughter (4.0 GPA in college and is working on a masters). Sis is not handicapped, only people who think they are handicapped are; she just has to do walking a bit differently than most. She has never complained about her lot in life, but has taken action to do and be the best she can. She is my hero.

I lost a great job (thru no fault of my own) in 1994. I took classes (at my expense), accepted no government assistance in any form, learned a new trade and never looked back. I am a better person for it. My sister was my inspiration.

Hey David, I’m glad you’re proud of your sister, she really does sound like an incredible person. It’s nice to see someone so loving toward their sibling. It’s sad so many people these days don’t seem to get along with their families. My dad had polio as a child also and raised 4 children and has a successful business as well. It wasn’t always easy but he and my mom both worked hard and taught us to respect others and we rarely were treated to junk food, toys and all the rest that friends of ours got. The funny thing is we ended up not caring about those things as adults and have great respect for our parents. Not because they were opressive either but because they lead by example. Anyway, i was just wanting to say that I understand where you are coming from about the inserts, but there are people that can barely afford to pay for the bare necessitys, like older retired people. I have a fire place and dont use it for the same reason as you stated about half the heat just going straight on out of the chimney.

The scariest part about the present administration is that our country is well on its way to a “one-party” system. There are only 3 branches of government so there are checks and balances. One party already controls the Legislative branch (Congress) and the Administrative branch (White House). Now Souter announces his retirement from the Supreme Court, he along with numerous older justices may very well be replaced during Obama’s 4-year term. So, when that happens, all three branches of the government will be controlled by one party. Legislative/Administrative/Judicial.

Obama removed the 2010 census from the Department of Commerce and put it under the White House, with Rahm Emmanuel in charge. ACORN has been hired to assist with the census gathering information. Does anyone know the number one primary reason for the census? In addition to finding out how many people, it is how the representatives in the House of Representatives are allocated to areas in each state. So, depending on upward or downward population in specific areas, those areas could have their representatives increased or decreased at the next elections. Does this scare anyone besides me??

Statements like that can be misconstrued, and taken to mean some kind of militia movement.

Any fool who actually thinks that some kind of armed insurrection is the answer, is seriously deluded. I mean that.

Anyone, I mean ANYONE, with foolish ideas such as those, and I have heard some disturbing comments on this site, who foolishly think armed insurrection is the answer is a nut.

I have heard comments from vets. I can tell you this, logistically an armed insurrection fantasy is simply not possible. As if such a thing could ever be organized. As if such a thing wouldn’t be infiltrated top to botton with FBI.

If you want to change this country, run for office. If you want to change this country, vote out EVERY member of congress and every member of the senate. We still have voting in our hands. Better oversite at the polls is a good idea too.

Unfortunately it is all of us working people that have to pay it back. So if Frank is a working individual he is out of touch with reality. You don’t get anything for free. You will pay it back ten fold, if not you then somebody will. There is no such thing as a stimulus package, it is money borrowed at a great cost from another country. Money that does have to be paid back. I personally don’t want it and no Frank, we people that don’t want that money do NOT have piles of it sitting around. We instead have worked hard for what we have and know we aren’t owed anything in life, except what we have earned.

A government ‘hand out’ is not what is needed, but nor is a Hoover style adherance to fiscal conservatism that pushed this nation into the Great Depression in the early 1930s. What is needed is for the government to properly maintain and responsibly expand our nations infrastructure which -due to Republican spending cuts- has become run down and neglected to the level of a 2nd world nation. This is an embarrassment and shows great disrespect for our Grandparents who worked so hard to bring this nation to the top of the class!

If the Dem’s were so wanting to make things so rosey then I guess they should have banned together and made things happen. It is a fact that there are always dissenters on both sides that go with the flow and end up causing this or that bill to pass. The same is true with dealing with infrastructure. To state that Republicans are the root of all evil is irresponsible. The Dem’s and the Repub’s both have dirty laundry when it comes to not taking care of our nation. Furthermore, spending isn’t always the answer. That is what has put us on the brink of national bankruptcy. There needs to be less waste and more use of “available” monies for things that are truely needed. Furthermore we are hardly a 2nd world nation, there are problems without a doubt. However the whole nation isn’t broken. Waste and greed have led to most of the problems regarding poor infrastructure. Money that should have gone to repair roads and bridges have instead gone to lining the pockets of politicians on both sides. Also, we do need a government to spend conservatively, spending willey nilley by the federal or local government isn’t going to get us out of this situation. Instead they need to instill assurance in the American people where they feel it is safe to spend instead of hording their money. That is what will get our economy going and getting infrastructure problems fixed, not pulling out the federal credit card. I personally don’t want to work till the day I die to pay for somebody elses mistakes.

I’m with Margaret and Kristian. I have worked veyr hard, given some things up, ang what I have is mine. It does not belong to the government to redistribute as they see fit.
An example of how good the government will be with our increased tax dollars: When the American people decided to allow casinos to be built, and gambling to be legalized on the lie that tax dollars would go to education.

However I believe there are enough of us out there that prefers to live in the real world, deal with reality, and willing to do what ever it takes to get the USA strong and free again. Don’t take too lightly the possibility of some wanting to throw away the Constitution and Bill of Rights with both hands, and the same ones looking for a hand out..

One more thing,( and if you have college age children you know what I am saying here) I told my dauther that we spend alot of money sending her to college, which is very much a capitalist organization, for that school to preach socialism. It is ironic and I only asked her to consider that and see it for what it is.

While you may feel that “some” of your liberties were removed during the 911 era, (which has been dismissed by Obama), you fail to see that each and every day the Constitution and the liberties you enjoy under it are being eroded. Obama has Nationalized the banks, Under Cap and Trade the Government will be governing all utility companies. The Government is in possession of the Auto Makers, Banks, Insurance Companies like AIG, Merrill Lynch and B of A, and is clammering for more.

Expect your taxes to increase to around 70% of your income while he spends not only you but your children, grandchildren and great grand children into the poor house. My crystal ball tells me that Obama, a Malignant Narcissist, (and look it up Mary) has defamed the US in front of foreign Nations to gain their approval. He seeks out one world power, one world currency and I believe, hopes to be the world leader. I find that most of those who want socialism have not been in the military. Those of us who have been have seen what happens when socialism is the mode of government. The poor have no health care and many of them who die at a very young age. Food is a full time job to just obtain it. Anne, you asked my age: in less than a month I’ll be 50.
GW was warned many times about threats leading to 9/11 and he did nothing but spend time riding horses in Texas and reading books to kindergarden classes. That did nothing to keep it from happening. As president, regardless of what happened when Clinton was in the white house, GW failed to prevent 9/11 from happening through his lack of effort. The same with Cheney. Even Reagan ended the cold war before any disasters and with no battles despite any rise in the cold war during Jimmy Carter’s term in the white house. Well, once we went to war, the war should have been just in Afghanistan, and where are these WMD”s that was why GW and Cheney said we should focus on Iraq instead.
Their lies convinced many people in congress to approve of going to war in Iraq(but not Obama, and I’m glad that Kerry changed his mind when he saw the truth). GW and Cheney should now be in international courthouse for their dishonesty due to their desire for their companies they invested in to bring them great profits as one of the main reasons they wanted war in Iraq, as well as the desire to fight personal enemies of the Bushes.. I’m glad to see that some of the people on GW’s staff might be in the international courthouse shortly. Then if we are fighting wars in two countries, as well as having to deal with Katrina, it is the responsibility of the white house and congress to meet our expenses. Clinton met all our expenses including the military expenses we had during his term as well as for expenses for the hurricanes in Florida in the ’90′s, and he had a surplus. And don’t forget what happened to Yugoslavia when he was in the white house. Our army fought there for awhile, and he knew when to withdraw. Is anyone still living in hotels in FL from Hurricane Andrew? Any president and any party should never put us in debt like GW did. GW did go on a spending spree, for he spent far more than he could acquire the money for. Sorry if you don’t like it but that is a fact. Otherwise we woudn’t be in debt right now for around $56 trillion. The democrats didn’t control more than 60% of congress even those last two years of the GW/Cheney dynasty. So GW just vetoed almost everything they tried to do. That makes him even more responsible. Not only did our expenses rise, the cost of living rose faster than ever, and the wealthy just got tax cuts after tax cuts. Even I got money back, and I’m not wealthy. I would have preferred to use it for helping our country but instead I donated that money to places that needed it. Is that what Cheney did with his tax returns? Cheney only paid a little over 10% of his income in taxes. IS that right when our country is $56 trillion in debt due to his decisions? He should be paying closer to 40-50% of his income in taxes due to his decisions being failures and his great wealth. Republicans wanted to cut our taxes and cut our spending. GW cut our taxes and increased our spending. That shouldn’t have even been a choice. How can anyone in congress approve of it? But the Republicans did and it passed in Congress. It is really to bad the democrats couldn’t get a 60% majority until Obama made it to the white house. I hope their majority now lasts forever or we’ll be back in debt like we were under both president Bushes. Why couldn’t GW solve the problems before 9/11? Then maybe his tax cuts could have been more acceptable. I say we get rid of the monetary system altogether. After all, money isn’t money at all, it is just debt. Debt created out of thin air, with no way of paying back the interest. We are called on by God to be good stewards of the wealth He has given us. Our government is so corrupted and defiled with their handling of money, that Satan squeals with delight at the way they spend it. And there are thousands of them that do this. And they never will amount to anything, because the govenment is their crutch, their enabler. These people living off the government wont get better until their purse strings get cut. The so called rich are the only ones that employ what you call the poor. Most the poor we have unemployed on the streets as homeless poor, have taken steps to make themselves that way. There are a lot of indications that current voters tend to vote against, not for. So rather than voting for Obama, his election was what was left over after counting the negative votes on Bush and his follow-on candidate.

78-year old Senator Arlen Specter was honest, very uncharacteristically for a politician, about his reason for recently switching from the Republican to the Democratic Party: He thought he would have a better chance to be reelected as a Democrat than a Republican because he was lagging in current polls and knew he would lose the seat he has held for decades. He couldn’t care less about the Republican constituency that has donated to his campaigns and voted for him for decades, he just wants to have another term in the Senate.

These politicians are so out of touch with the American people it is a joke, and very few of them have anyone interests at heart except their own on the election day where their seats in Congress are on the line.

40 millionaires in US Senate

At least 40 of the 100 US senators are millionaires, some many times over, according to financial disclosure filings in mid-2008. Republicans on the list only outnumbered Democrats by a narrow margin of 22 to 18. However, Democratic senators hold the top five spots on the list and eight of the top ten, according to an analysis of the forms by CNN (a chronically Liberal news outlet).

These financial disclosures underscore the ever-widening income/net worth gap between the average American and those who claim to represent them in government. Even those congressmen who report a relatively modest net worth are pulling down a salary of $154,700, with leadership positions paying $171,900 annually and all of this for a couple of days a week for about 40 weeks a year.

Heading the list is the Massachusetts Democrat and presidential candidate John Kerry, with an estimated net worth of between $164 million and $211 million. He reports holdings in 75 mutual funds, along with two held jointly with his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, heiress to the Heinz food company fortune. Assets that she owns independently, which other sources estimate at hundreds of millions more, are not required to be included.

Second on the list, at a minimum of $111 million, is Democrat Herb Kohl of Wisconsin, who sold a chain of grocery and department stores (Kohl’s) before going into politics. He currently owns the Milwaukee Bucks professional basketball team.

Next are Democratic senators John J. Rockefeller of West Virginia at $81.6 million, former Wall Street executive Jon Corzine of New Jersey at $71 million and California’s Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who is married to financier Richard Blum, at $26.3 million (her husband’s money does not need to be included, but it is hundreds of millions).

The two Republicans in the top ten are banking heir Peter Fitzgerald of Illinois at $26.1 million and Bill Frist of Tennessee at $15.1 million. Frist reported blind trusts valued at between $6.5 million and $31 million.

Two other Democratic candidates for the presidency are high on the list. At ninth, North Carolina’s John Edwards reported a net worth ranging from $12.8 million to $60 million; at twelfth, Florida’s Bob Graham reported a range of from $7.7 million to $31.6 million. Before turning politician, Edwards made millions as a trial lawyer who won some of the largest jury awards in the history of North Carolina. The vagueness of the Congressional disclosure requirements conceals many millions of dollars of assets and income. Specific items are reported in broad categories, such as from $1 million to $5 million. In addition, the value of a primary residence—which in some cases may exceed $1 million by itself—need not be reported at all.

Thus, Hillary Rodham Clinton’s stated (disclosable) net worth could be as low as $352,000, or it could be as high as $3.8 million. Since her minimum is below $1 million, she is not counted among the 40 millionaires. This, in spite of the fact that her husband former president Bill Clinton took in $9.5 million last year for speaking appearances and that she had received $4 million of the $8 million advance on her recently released book, Living History.

Another prominent Democrat, presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman, is not counted for the same reason, even though he reported a possible worth of up to $1.8 million.

A complete and precise financial disclosure would no doubt push the percentage of senators who are millionaires to well over half of the Senate.

There are also dozens if not hundreds of millionaires among the 435 members of the US House of Representatives.

One of the most prominent is Nancy Pelosi, currently Speaker of the House, who listed assets of up to $92 million held jointly with her businessman husband Paul (CB Richard Ellis Real Estate Company Founder). They include two vineyards, one valued between $5 million and $25 million and the other valued between $1 million and $5 million, and a stake in a restaurant chain worth as much as $25 million. Rounding out their real estate holdings are two mountain townhouses and a share in a resort, worth up to $11 million combined.

One House millionaire, Wisconsin Republican James Sensenbrenner, who chairs the Judiciary Committee, reported his net worth down to the penny at $9,315,491.13. The heir to a paper manufacturing fortune, he holds two stocks—Kleenex manufacturer Kimberley Clark and pharmaceutical giant Pfizer—valued at between $500,000 and $1 million, along with three others in the range of $250,000 to $500,000 apiece.

Representative John Dingell, Democrat of Michigan and the longest-serving member of the House, listed 37 mutual funds owned alone or with his wife Debbie. This social layer of millionaires and near-millionaires in the US House and Senate pushed through the Bush administration’s massive tax cut for the rich, while somehow dropping the much touted per-child tax credit for families with incomes less than $20,000. Both Houses recently also approved a “reform” of Medicare that in reality guarantees no prescription drug benefits for American seniors. These millionaires and near-millionaires also rammed through without reading, the recent “stimulus” (aka: ‘spending’) bill and have plans for pushing through legislation momentarily for trillions and trillions of the hard-working American tax dollars.

Fox does not give the impression of presenting news in a way that encourages nor reflects much study or thought. They are often very entertaining with their alarming news and exciting shows. However, Fox does not impress me as being particularly unbiased nor balanced.
