2 Boys Attacked By Bear At N.J. Campsite

BRANCHVILLE, N.J., Aug. 4 (UPI) — Two boys were treated for injuries after being attacked by a black bear in tents at a New Jersey state forest, officials said.

The bear first attacked an 11-year-old sleeping at Stokes State Forest in Sussex County in northwestern New Jersey Wednesday, then a 12-year-old from Jersey City, the New York Daily News reported.

“This happens very infrequently,” said Larry Ragonese, a spokesman with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. “It’s the first bear attack against a person in the state this year.”

The boys were treated at a local hospital — one for a puncture wound, the other, a scratch.

Both were with a camping group.

After the attacks, adult chaperones took the boys to a cabin and tried to scare off the bear by making noises.

But the bear remained at the campsite when state officials arrived.

After being shot, the bear ran into woods, Ragonese said, and blood-sniffing dogs were trying to track it.

“The bear will be shot and killed when found because it’s considered an aggressive animal toward humans,” Ragonese said.

Officials did not release the boys’ names.
