WAUKEGAN, Ill., (UPI) – Authorities in Illinois said a landscaper working across from a Lake Michigan beach discovered a 12-foot to 15-foot Burmese python.
Waukegan Police Lt. Edward Fitzgerald said the yellow snake was spotted by a man trimming bushes Monday near Waukegan Municipal Beach and the reptile was captured without incident by Animal Control officers, the Chicago Sun-Times Media Network reported Tuesday.
“It was a little lethargic, because it’s been cold out and they’re cold-blooded. It wasn’t aggressive at all,” Fitzgerald said.
He said the snake, which he said was likely abandoned by its owner, “kind of livened up a little bit” after being taken to the Wildlife Discovery Center in Lake Forest.
Fitzgerald said the snake is being treated for an unspecified illness at the discovery center.
