11 Die In Plane Crash In Russia’s Far East

MOSCOW, Aug. 9 (UPI) — A cargo plane hauling food crashed in Russia’s Far East after the pilot reported an engine fire, killing 11 people, officials said.

The wreckage of the An-12 transport plane was found near a gold and silver mining operation in the Omsukcha district, RIA Novosti reported.

The plane had nine crew members and two passengers, and was carrying 16 metric tons of food when it disappeared from radar while traveling from Magadan to Chukotka, officials said.

The crew reported a fuel leak and fire in the right engine, ITAR-Tass reported. After the crew radioed their decision to return to Magadan, communications with the plan were lost. Later, the plane’s emergency beacon was heard near the Omsukchan settlement, but that, too, disappeared.
